Using Up2p from HDX to iPhone

If I’m streaming a 24bit 96kHz album on the HDX over UP2P to my iPhone 8, do I hear 24bit 96kHz or is it now MP3, and does that hold up to 24 bit 192kHz or 24 bit 384kHz?

I think it all depends on what IOS app you are using. The HDX will serve the HD file you tell it to but whether the IOS app can handle that all depends. You should be able to find out by reading the release notes for the upnp app. (Assuming that you mean upnp and not up2p!)

I wonder if you would be able to hear the difference on an iPhone ;-)

What Consciousness could do if he wanted to max the quality without going over the top would be to add a decent portable DAC/headphone amplifier (like a Dragonfly Red for example) and some good earbuds (e.g. Klipsch) or headphones and then I think he would hear the difference between different streams actually.

I agree with David here: iPhone isn’t a bad transport. The little external DAC built into the iPhone 8 lightning-to-headphones adapter is actually pretty nice... I have no experience with UPnP or hi-res on iPhones, but it’s definitely possible to differentiate say FLAC redbook from 320k with average earbuds.
