Tidal on Superuniti

Posted by: Docleaf on 21 July 2018

Just got my superuniti reconditioned and they upgraded firmware to 4.6.00. I expected to get tidal and Spotify streaming as an input but I don’t see it either on the app or the screen inputs. The unit BC SW is 3D14171. What am I missing

Is your version of the Naim app also up to date, and have you enabled the Tidal and Spotify inputs in the app’s input settings menu? The app should then prompt you to log in to Tidal with your user name and password.

Ok so what almost certainly happened here is that the SuperUniti firmware was upgraded to 4.6 from something below 4.4 without going through 4.4 first. Naim haven't made much of this, but if your SuperUniti was on, say, 4.3 and they updated straight to 4.6, you will find that Tidal is missing from the menus. It's nothing to do with the app.

What you have to do is to do the 4.4 update now and then do the 4.6 update again. That will make everything right. (It's in the release notes for the 4.6 update now I think, but anyway this is the official advice from Naim). It was something we all missed during beta testing but I picked up immediately after the release when I noticed this same problem on my SU that I had just updated from 4.3 to 4.6.

Strange, you should see the inputs on the menu. If you can’t see them on the front screen either, maybe the firmware update didn’t complete. You could try running the update again.

No Chris, really, he has to do 4.4 first then 4.6. This is directly what Steve Harris, Naim software R&D director told me after investigating the issue for me.

its because Naim didn't include the Tidal library in the 4.6 update, assuming it would already be in the device. But as we know, it was the 4.4 update that did that, so if you go from 4.3 or below to 4.6, you don't get the Tidal firmware at all.

As the update was done at Naim, they should know better! Still, if the OP is unfamiliar with the update process he can always ask his dealer to do it.

He doesn't say that it was done at Naim and yes they should know better but they still released 4.6 without the Tidal library.

I've only seen this Tidal missing problem reported a couple of times on the forum. I suspect that if someone is interested in Tidal then their streamer would be on 4.4 already and if they aren't interested in Tidal they wouldn't notice that it was missing after the update as it wasn't there before! I don't use Tidal, so two of my streamers were still on 4.3 but two were on 4.4 for other reasons. When someone reported the problem of Tidal missing after the 4.6 update I checked all of mine that I had just updated to 4.6 and found the two that were on 4.4 had Tidal and the two that were on 4.3 didn't. So I talked to Naim in the beta group and after some head scratching in Salisbury all became clear. And Steve's advice back to me on what to do is as I said above.

He says ‘they’ updated it, so I assume that must mean his dealer, agent, or the factory. So I’d say that whoever did it should do it again and check that it’s working properly.

It was done by the naim distributor in the US and I suspect you are completely right David. I contacted my dealer with your diagnosis and I’ll see what they say.

thanks
