Naim Audio App

Posted by: Blue Bottle on 22 July 2018

Why on earth doesn't the Naim audio application run in XOS; it is incredibly inconvenient having to find the iPad or use the iPhone in place of the desktop; I often end up using iTunes in preference to Core, which is ridiculous... does anyone know whether Naim is working on a port to XOS?

Apologies if this has the subject of a previous topic, but I can't find under search.

Thanks

What is XOS?

I presume you mean OSX? The short answer is no.

The vision for this ecosystem does not include the use of a laptop to control it.  While it's apparently "inconvenient" for you to find your iPhone, the rest of us always have it in our pocket and find it inconvenient to boot up a laptop.  I strongly suspect that the development costs are viewed a 'not worth it' by Naim.

(There was an OSX version of n-Serve at one point I recall, but Naim had never done such a version of their streamer app, or the now-unified Naim App.)

Linn's Kinsky App runs on OSX and will control a Naim player.  It seems to not be supported any more by Linn, but if you can find it to download it it'll work.

ChrisSU is exactly correct, in that Naim have announced they are not looking at working on an OSX port of the iOS app... but don’t lose hope, since the recent announcement of the Apple development framework and tools to make it significantly easier (perhaps even same code base) to port iOS apps starting in OSX Mojave. The goal is release in 2019 (ie not this summer!) but Mojave will include base apps from iOS (News, Stocks, voice Memos, Home)  to show how it works. This was announced and demonstrated at WWDC in June. Keep your fingers crossed if this is important to you... My guess is that when it’s a freebie (or nearly so) for the Naim software team, it will happen.

Bart

Thanks; I already have Kinski, but didn't realise that it would work for Naim.  i appreciate that for many installations, the desk/laptop is irrelevant, but there are a substantial number of users who have a system set up around their desk; for these users, it is not a case of booting up and it is inconvenient (not "inconvenient"!).

Thank you again.

Nick

Alan,

Thanks; potentially good news; appreciate the detail.

Kinda short sighted on the part of NAIM, given that there are far more Samsung (and other android phones ) than Apple.

Just saying..................................

Naim do have a version of the app for Android. It is a little behind IOS in terms of stability but they are working hard on that currently.

Try an Android emulator and run the Naim app in there. I use Nox and run it on Windoze 10 but I believe you can run Nox on a Mac as well. Works a charm here

That's a good idea - you might be able to run the iOS app in Xcode on the Mac but this might be a simpler option.

Is there an official Nox website?

Kinsky was replaced by Linn Kazoo.....this works perfectly on OSX although you also need to install BubbleUpnpServer on OSX. This allows Kazoo to talk to the Naim streamers, all to do with OpenHome renderers etc. Plenty of information around and easy to set up on Mac.
