What are the uses of HQ and LQ under Music in Uniti Core
Posted by: tmtsui on 22 July 2018
Dear all,
My CDs ripped by the Uniti Core are stored in the MQ folder under the Music directory.
Since muisc files cannot be simply copied to these two folders and the Core can rip CDs only, wonder what are the uses of these HQ and LQ folder ?

They are for downloaded or imported files. MQ is for rips hence MQ master quality.

Thanks for the reply SimonPeterArnold.
So do you mean if I import some files, say from an USB stick, they will stored under these two folders ? And they are saved according to the file formats or selected by users ?
No I am afraid SimonPeterArnold is mistaken. Downloaded or ripped elsewhere files are stored in the Downloads folder not the HQ or LQ folders.
The HQ and LQ folders are not used by Core - they are a hangover from earlier Naim servers where the unit could automatically put MP3 versions of rips into the LQ folder if you set it to do that. The Core does not currently have this option. The HQ folder is not, so far as I am aware, ever used and presumably was part of a development road map that didn't go anywhere. But maybe one of those with longer Naim memories than me can say differently.
So with the Core it's simple. You put music you add with a pc/mac into the Downloads folder and rips will automatically go into the Music/MQ folder.

Thanks David for the explanation.
Hope that Naim's developers are aware of this as well. If HQ and LQ are useless, they should be removed to avoid confusing users.

David is correct, the HQ and LQ folders are currently unused on the Core. If you store any files on the Core other than CDs it has ripped, it’s important not to put them in these folders, they need to be in the downloads folder, where you can move and edit them without upsetting the Core’s database.
Hi ChrisSu,
Actually it is not possible to copy files to the HQ and LQ folders at all. So, no worry about putting files onto them by accident.
They are just confusions to users, especially new one like me.

I think they have just stuck with Naim's convention, not least because anyone moving a library ripped on a US or HDX may well have MP3 files in the LQ folder. They won't change it now anyway. What would be the point?

I dare say most users have never seen those folders. Those who like to explore hard drives and figure out what to put in what folders can do so on a much less 'locked down' piece of hardware. The Core is locked down for a reason!
