HDX refuses to recognise N-serve app on iPad

Posted by: crackie on 23 July 2018

This one is doing my head in. Just got a brand new current version iPad , downloaded the N-serve app from the Apple App Store , it refuses to find my HDX.

I am running version 1.7b on the HDX, HDX working fine from my naim remote, no error codes popping up. The real kicker is the exact same app on my iPhone 7 works fine, no issue at all,  it will find my HDX every time. N-serve app version is 1.2 on both devices.

I uninstalled the app about 5 times and download new a new fresh app,  did a hard restart on the HDX, it simply will not find my HDX, this is really doing my head in. Could it be a fault with IOS version 11.4.1 ? My iPhone 7 is running version IOS 10.3.3 and works perfect with the N-serve app.

The obvious stuff first, is it defo on the same network as the HDX?

The other thing to look at is that when you run n-serve on iPad, you have to tell it where to look. I haven't got my US handy at present and it's off anyway but my recollection is that you have to select the server in one menu option before anything else works. But you have done all that right?

The other thing you can try is adding your HDX manually. You have to tell the app not to connect automatically then add in the IP address of the HDX which you can get using one of the free apps like Fing or NetAnalyser. Or maybe you can get the IP address from the front panel display on the HDX....

N-SERVE SHOULD BE 2.12 (11514).
If your server is not seen  there should be a connect button.
On the connect screen try to uncheck auto connection, and see if the server shows up. If not enter the ip address as suggested.

If unchecking auto connection does not work try to enable it again, and then enter the ip address manually. I had similar problems when I wanted to connect my iPhone to a friends server, but it may be caused by the auto connect setting making the app trying to connect to my own server and not the one on his network.

......but make sure you use the correct IP address, as the HDX uses two of them.

... which is the IP address he needs?

If all network components, and the whole network, run with automatic IP assignment, ther is no need.

With a normally configured network, n-Serve will find a server (HDX, US) automatically.

Adam that is obvious but his new iPad isn't seeing it, so we are trying to suggest coping strategies!

Hi David - yes - gathered that. But the OP has not yet responded that his iPad is on the same network, to begin with. If it is, than your strategy may be the only one. Although it would seem a very strange way of doing it.....

Adam

I recall another member who had just this problem recently Adam and he fixed it, eventually, by discovering that if he turned off autocomnect and used the ip address to connect manually, it all came to life. So it's not my strategy, it's how another guy fixed his similar problem!

It's the address for the server rather than the front panel display section.

Hi all, yes all the same network. Tried manual IP address entry, no joy. Thank you all for the suggestions.

It really shouldn’t be this hard, what is killing me is my N-serve app on iPhone 7 works just fine, but the bugger refuses to connect with my iPad  N-serve app.

Just got an email from Phill Harris, he had a list of suggestions - including rebooting my router. That did the trick, so obvious I guess , I did reboot the HDX but not my router.

Thank you all for the advice, especially Phil for such a speedy email reply.

Customer service advice from naim HQ is second to none in my opinion, as this is perhaps the fifth or sixth time I have requested advice and always recieved speedy and accurate advice !!

Yes, that was myself, when my new fibre router wouldn't see the HDX.

Glad to see you've resolved the problem, CRACKIE, but should anyone have a similar issue, and which resists a re-start, then the free App, Net Analyser will scan your network and show the IP address of all connected devices.

It's then just a case of disabling "auto connect" on the settings page within n-Serve, and manually entering the IP address for the HDX.

Will keep this in mind for later reference Dave, thank you.

Yes, always reboot a router if networks gone wonkers.

Indeed. Phil fixed my first ever Unitiserve issue by suggesting a router restart.
