Confused with connecting Dynaudio Sub 6 to Naim Uniti Nova

Posted by: Matt D on 24 July 2018

Calling all hi-fi gurus...

I recently have purchased the following setup;

- Naim Uniti Nova
- Dynaudio Special 40 bookshelf’s

I’m looking at purchasing the Dynaudio Sub 6 to complete the system.

Given the Sub 6 has onboard DSP to match with the Special 40’s it’s important I connect it right.

I’m confused... what cables to I use to utilise the DSP on the sub? RCA to the sub.. then RCA back to the Naim???

Thanks in advance

I'm sure your dealer can give you the correct info if not set it up also. I am curious how you like the sub with S40 after you get it. I've thought about adding one to my Contour 20.

Yes like SS said,I would ask the dealer you bought it from.I once used my JL Audio Fathom 112 with my old Supernait 2,and Dyn excite 12s.The SN2 has sub outs (RCA),which I connected both left and right to the JL.I realize the Dyn sub is different,so might need a different configuration,but I would start with the analog outputs from the Nova into the sub,the sub should do all the DSP work on its own,without cables going back to the Nova...I would think.I have not looked at the manuals very closely that you linked to though.

I would try connecting the RCA inputs on the sub to the RCA analogue outputs on the Nova using any decent quality RCA cable. I'm assuming these analogue outs on the Nova are always hot. You'll know quick enough if you get no sub output. If they aren't hot, call Naim and ask if they are switched. If you connect your RCA outs on the Nova to the RCA inputs on your sub and your sub makes sounds, you are in business. Then just leave the speakers attached to the Nova to run full range. Naim's output level on its RCAs is probably consistent with the 0dB setting on the sub (check the chart in menu1), so I don't think you'll need to change the input sensitivity settings in the sub's config menu. I would then go through the sub's config menu to select and use the presets for your Special 40s. That will set the sub's crossover point for you so you don't have to fiddle with that manually. You can also tweak the parametric EQ settings as you see fit, just read the manual on what that does and experiment with it a bit to find what sounds best to you.

Looking at the connection diagrams in the manual, it would appear that the Dynaudio sub is designed to be connected between a pre-amp and either a power amp or a pair of active speakers. As such, I can't see how you will be able to use it to its full DSP potential with just the Nova, which only offers a pre-out, without adding a separate power amp - and this is not something to do lightly with any Naim pre/power!! I would definitely get in touch with your dealer and question them about this as something simpler may well suffice or be more appropriate for use with the Nova.

I suspected this may be the case. So the Sub 6 DSP might be smart enough to adjust the high pass in the bookshelfs and the low pass in the sub. Seems if I cant connect the speakers to the sub I might be missing out on the proper DSP functionality.

I have a Velodyne sub connected to my Nova via the normal sub out RCA connection. The Velodyne has full on board DSP and an internal 1250 watt power amplifier. This works perfectly for me filling in the lower end of my n-Sats. I haven't had the need to adjust the high pass on my main speakers and the system works fine without. The Velodyne has provision for this by using high level connections both ways between sub and amp but I wouldn't want extra processing between my Nova and the main speakers.

I'm with PEV, just use the preamp output for the sub input and don't try to use the high pass from the sub for the speakers. You would have to run out from the sub and back into the Nova amp section to do that and whatever minor DSP effects you may be losing might pale in comparison to taking the Naim signal and altering it with another section of circuitry before returning to the amp.
