ND555 Impressions
Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018
The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.
I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.
And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

Pretty similar here... well they are not too scary, the guide is ...
... In my setup I have a separate WiFi network for the kids (their devices are blacklisted from the main WiFi network just in case they manage to get the main network passphrase) on their own segregated VLAN so that they can't do anything nefarious with the "grown ups" machines (more accurately if they download any malware then it can't get to our machines) and that WiFi network is also on a timed schedule so no (yeah right!) arguments about bedtimes!

Do the kids have access to the Naim Forums?

Completely off topic I know but I honestly wish that game had never been created - it causes the kids more anguish and distress than anything else at the moment.

... If you know what a somewhat autistic 8 year old girl and a 13 year old boy are like you'd know that would involve far too much work invested for no instant gratification ...

Agreed, worry for our kids.
But to keep this related to the thread, their is plenty of anguish (waiting for an ND555) and distress (NDS to ND555 decision) here ????
I had wifi problems, but all resolved with a mesh system (mine is from linksys). As I need a wifi bridge for 2-3 meters (unfortunately) between ethernet slot connecting to nas/unitiserve in my ‘serverroom’ and the rack with the nds (soon nd555), its been great w simple app-based setup of network priority to naim system etc. Its 100pct stable, no drop-outs and plug&play.
Really great that naim has tested nd555 and developed filters for a consumer environment as music enjoyment should not require an engineering degree (or lots of hours tweaking, if u dont know how). Br Lars
Just remember with mesh systems such as 802.11s based systems (like google Wifi etc) , they will reduce your throughput depending on the number of mesh hops being traversed ... effective formula
throughput = bandwidth * 1/(1+n)
where n is the number of hops ... so 1 hop, 50% reduction, 2 hops, 66% reduction in Wifi speed... so for low data uses such as web, email etc then mesh can be great, but I say for greater throughput uses like video and hidef audio streaming a regular over lapping multiple Ethernet connected 802.11 access points providing a single ESSID is the way to go, or if using mesh then multiple Ethernet connected mesh STAs with only the occasional wireless node and accept access through these wireless nodes to be less than through the wired STAs A case of the right tool for the job as always...... in my experience planning an 802.11s mesh Wifi for reliable throughput, unless it’s a trivial implementation in which case whether it’s mesh or not is irrelevant, can be quite hard, and probably not possible by the average consumer ... albeit they are easy to throw together.
Another Wow moment, listening to Diana Krall, presence and soundstage fantastic.....
Hi Simon,
i am not having problems at all. I have 300/60mbit and 3 hubs. Without wifi priority, an iphone easily gets 80-90mbit, and nds gets more. I am not saying it cannot be complicated, but to me this really made a good difference. Fit and forget...
br Lars
Keep sharing Bert - I am really looking forward to get the Nd555 soon. Br Lars

Bert, it was whilst listening to some Diana Krall during my home demo of the ND555 last weekend that finally convinced me to purchase the ND555.
As you say the soundstage is fantastic.

We have to always be honest, more Hifi system will make sound Diana fantastic...., but I anyhow didn’t buy based on demo, but based on trust and expectation...

That’s great... as long as you understand the limitations, it might well be the right solution for you.. where perhaps reach as opposed to throughput is the most important ... as opposed to needing both which is what I was talking about.
You see I like to screen share hidef video from my iPhone and iPad to an appleTV whilst streaming, others YouTubing, and lossless audio playing on Wifi speakers, laptop file transfers etc... and in my set it all works perfectly at the same time .. no hidef video lagging over the Wifi at all, or troublesome latency, or dropouts.... and on my Wifi management software, I can see Wifi devices moving around APs to optimally load balance... it’s all rather neat..

Terry, I’m just enjoying the music too much to be bothering with this type of question. It’ll be months, or maybe years, before this type of comparison becomes of any interest to me. Right now Roon + ND555 hits all the bases!

As good as your quality turntables ? Or at least as musical?
My ND555 has been running for slightly more than a day now. Since it replaced the NDS, I felt that the sound was very uneven and lack focus as compared to the NDS. So last night as I was checking the connections at the back of the ND555 and I discovered that the earth switch was set to "floating". I was quite surprised as the factory usually sets it to Chassis (or "default" in the case of the ND555) for most source products. Switching the earth switch to "default" made a huge difference. Everything is now back in focus and the ND555 is now showing what a beast it is. Interesting times ahead.
Digital can sound very musical as much as the best turntables....
a demo of NDX with XPS DR against LP12 convinced me.. the NDX sounded spacious, full of musicality and engaging...
and ND555 is completely ahead of NDX!!!
Quick question I have a 552 and when the nd555 arrives I will loose the ir remote volume control of nds. So apparently I need to connect nd555 to 552 with a system automaton cable....what is this? is it an rca to 3.5 cable ...mono...can u advise ....

Richie, You will need a RCA to 3.5mm cable. It may be a little difficult to find mono ones (ie. 1 x RCA to mono 3.5mm) these days. Stereo RCA to 3.5mm cable will work fine as well as you only need to use only one RCA (red).
Your dealer should be able to supply the correct cable. Will the dealer be installing the ND555 if so they should set up system automation.
3.5 to RCA cables are easy to find on internet, most are stereo but work OK.
I made my own. Quick trip to Maplins, and 10 mins with the soldering iron and heat shrink. Shame Maplins failed it was always handy for this type of thing.
Surely there must be a market for an audiophile system automation cable? There is a niche here waiting for someone to exploit it pointlessly and expensively.

Great ... thanks guys ... I did study the sockets on the back ......... I suspected this was the case. Are there any little configuration tips to get the remote working........to control volume, mute on 552. My dealer is remote - so this will be a self install - my local dealer was not helpful regarding trade in.
Want smoother more precise volume control? Then you need the new SysAut Ultra! A snip at £500.
