ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

My dealer has one on website for £3500 inc 12 month warranty, so private sales should be lower.

Tell your dealer to raise the price to 5k, please. ????

It’s a 2012 NDS, so presumably more recent ones would be more expensive.

Naim, are you listening...can you help ????

I was watching the dwindling resale value of NDS's this evening.  You can pick one up for under three thousand pounds !

Notwithstanding that, I noticed the distinct lack of NDS's offered for sale on that auction site.  There's now just three, all BIN at well above market price.  I was relating that to the number of ND555's being shipped and questioning in my own mind whether Naim are actually shipping this new box in any kind of quantity... or even close to the quantity that have been ordered by our dealers.

There have been two rumours that I've seen... the first about shortage of burndy cables and the latest (can't remember who) about a last minute software change;  each of which being ignored by Naim.  Wouldn't it be nice to hear how fast they are really being shipped and even whether shipping forcasts are being met.  This would be commercially sensitive, of course, but some indication of achieved or anticipated order fulfilment performance would be useful.

I feel memories of the frustration of the illusive HDX software fix* of 2010* (ish?) rising from the ranks of prospective ND555 customers.

* I think it was the HDX, and I think it was around 2010 and I'm pretty sure it was a Naim product. ... but I do remember it was bl**dy frustrating.

This is one reason that - I have bitten the bullet ........ my NDS is a 2012 ........ even though I bought it second hand ........ I can see the resale values dropping to around 2 - 2.5k. So if i waited say 12 or 18 months - the new player cost would increase by 1k and the value of mine reduced 1-2k ..... all of a sudden - i could be around 3k down in  12 months..... in terms of trying to fund an ND555 - that would tip the balance for me in not affording to change......the chances of finding a second hand ND555 would be like finding hens teeth........ of course the alternative would have been to buy a second hand CD555 ............

And so say all of us Chag !

Posted on: 20 August 2018 by analogmusic

the second hand value of NDS will remain at around 4K GBP.... no need to panic.

We can of course help you in hitting the buttons more,

Quick question Bert ........ I have auditioned the ND555 but in a lesser system than mine ........ in your system have found the perceived bass performance - leaner but also tighter and deeper .... seems a contradiction but I am sure I detected this effect even on a different pre-amp and power amp combo.

RICHIEROO, I had simalar thoughts as yourself but I need a 555PS to go with my ND555.

if I had waited till next year the price increase on both would be a bitter pill to swallow plus it is more than likely that the dealer offer for my NDX could diminish as the NDX2 becomes available.

My dealer and I have agreed the numbers and I will visit the shop in the morning to confirm the order. I think I am probably looking at six weeks delivery can't wait.

Yeah - agree it is a tricky one ........ but on balance for me it was the right thing to do .... especial since I got a reasonable generous offer on my NDS. There seem to be plenty  of 555ps on the market ........ so I would pick up a s/h unit and then upgrade ... when funds permit....... I have a feeling that you will not wait long .... especially when that beast is lingering waiting to be hooked up!!!

I too noticed that sale price, but it was scratched. I'm now trying to convince myself that a scratch like that is not something that any serious self-respecting music lover could ever live with and would be willing to spend considerably more to get a mint example!

As far as shipping forecasts are concerned, I never pay them any heed. Not unless I'm planning to go wind surfing, of course.

Good save

My order is scheduled to arrive in the first week of September. That equates to a lead time of about one month. I will share the delivery date after the fact. This is not commercially sensitive information.

I worked out the same logic. I suspect my order will be going in when my NAP500 comes back from its DR treatment.

Similar here. Isn't maths useful when used properly?

I'd be more than happy to pay less for a scratched case of any box every day of the week - each to his own. Black felt tip or boot polish can work wonders!

I'm with you on that. Then again someone was bemoaning the marks left un the underside of his ND555 by the tape Naim used to stop the transit bolts unscrewing under the gentle care of a courier driver.

Scratched equipment to me means a lack of care taken with its ownership. For some items that's not an issue, but for a piece of high quality audio kit that needs extra care taken when moving (due to its floaty bits) , I'd be a bit wary of something that wasn't completely mint.

If I was looking for an NDS then a mint, cared for example would more likely get my cash. As you say, each to their own.

Not everyone gets my dry sense of humour.

Someone on here got their 500 Killed By Courrier on its way back to Salisbury for some work. Its arrival happened to coincide with a factory visit I was on. It was a truly horrifying sight. It looked like it had been dragged behind a vehicle for miles. Maybe it had!

Posted on: 20 August 2018 by Richieroo

Could that been dr-agged.............

Posted on: 20 August 2018 by Harry

For the purposes of this conversation - very possibly.
