ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

I was told by my dealer - that the NDX2 is supposed to be very close if not slightly better than the NDS - making it pretty good value in Naim terms (still expensive!)............ time will tell.

you can read the hifi news review by Andrew Everardt.  Ndx2 close, but he preferred his nds for a bit more boogie factor.   The ndx2 had a shade more details.

Of course, it’s just a review....

I wonder if the NDX2 will regain its "boogie factor" with the addition of an XPS-DR?  Hoping so.

I flagged this to my dealer, who will be knee deep in traded in NDSs in the Autumn.

Don't forget I think the new streamers have more programability - re firmware so things will no doubt improve further knowing Naim.

You can’t quantify this. You’ve got to hear it. Doesn’t matter that it’s the new Naim top source. Doesn’t matter if it’s now the best streamer in the world (or maybe in the top 5 if you’re not an unabashed Naim cheerleader). You’ve got to like it. I can’t like it for you or tell you how much you like it.

Harry, add my NDX to the list, just confirmed the order for a ND555 and 555PS with Audience this morning looks as if Ian is going to put some mileage on the van we all these installations ?

It’s a term for “ he will be inundated with or will get a lot of trade in” of the older NDS streamers.

Congratulations PCD. I was talking to Andrew last Thursday (a comfortable pit stop when in Bath). He is always discrete, although he did mention a potential NDX trade in which he was hoping to complete. Might be you.

FR - as said by others since my last post. Knee deep means that he will have a number of traded in NDSs from ND555 buyers. When a few boxed NDSs are placed on the floor and  more placed on top, he will easily be up to his knees in them. But it's an expression more than a height measurement.

Audience have always given me good PX deals. I'm not interested in squeezing another business until the blood stops coming out, I know how complex and tricky it can be. Besides which - no dealer = no deals. I might not hang out for the biggest payouts but Helen and I have always considered them to be more than fair. What we are getting for our NDS is what we hoped. We're not giving it away but there should be some worthwhile margin left in it for the dealer.

Andrew now has a number of "obsolete" streamers to shift which have significant cash tied up in them. It was for this reason I pointed to that magazine  review of the NDX2. The reviewer commended the NDS for being more boogieful and "old school Naim" than the comparatively sophisticated NDX2. In his opinion. Quoting that to someone who wants NDX2 level performance but doesn't want to spend NDX2 money has got to be worth the conversation, particularly if he has a pile of pre loved NDSs behind the curtain. Car dealers get reprinted reviews or edited excerpts therefrom to push models that have done well in the comics.

You think Andrew is helping dealers to sold the big stock of nds that is growing?   So his review is a bit non objective?  if i understood well.    For knees deep, i understand now.  thanks

I jumped on the trade offer I got to swap out NDS for ND555; no time to waste!

I used to knock about with someone who never tired of hammering into my thick skull the fact that if she spent, for example £1K on accessories in a 50% sale, she had in fact saved us £1K, as opposed to lost it. I filed this model away for future reference and indeed, it has come in useful from time to time.

Yep, I will second that. But I need to just hear the NDX2 for my sanity and bank balance.

Gazza, don't bother with the NDX2, the NDS is still better (Mr Everard said so) and you can have mine for a mere £6k, way cheaper than a ND555.

What am I going to do with those funds you ask......? I am sure you know the answer to that.

Richard - before you moderate me, I am kidding!

Well seriously it had crossed my mind with my dealer offering one for £3.5 K ( ouch sorry about that). And although the ND555 is better, the NDS is clearly in the same mould, a very good chip off the old block as we say. But I am kind of set on the new streaming platform, having a Nova.

10/10 for trying NIgelb

What pre will you add, if i may ask?

Gazza, don't try '...my dealer has one half that price...' on me. Can't kid a kidder.

OK, I will chuck in a couple of pints on me. Can't say fairer than that.

You drive a hard bargain Sir!

I think I will still go with the NDX2/XPS DR, mainly for the newer platform and updates will keep me going for this lifetime. I could do without the color screen, but have only seen pics. Can one turn it green?  I could justify the 555, just not the two PS’s.

You're welcome Ken. It is a game changer. But each to our own. Funny things ears.

Posted on: 21 August 2018 by Harry

I don't need a screen at all. But the market would not tolerate that.
