ND555 Impressions
Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018
The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.
I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.
And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

And does it have a name??
I’m on a hiline for the 555, no SL here. I wasn’t convinced by the demo one I tried when I had a CDX2/555ps into 282/250-2 (can’t remember if the ps was a hicap or a SCDR at the time). It might be different with 500 series DR but my NBLs are too close to the wall for SL speaker cable so I just haven’t bothered revisiting SL anything else either.
I use SL wires with my SL2s quite happily. They are about 90mm from the wall. The clearance is about 1mm.

Whatever about selling ND555, it certainly looks like a good way of selling Melody Gardot!
After reading Berts post, I listened to this album in Tidal, and I fully agree that it showcases the ND555 perfectly, ( and Melody also). I then bought the 24 bit version, which improves on Tidal. Only problem now is how to explain to my spouse the image displayed in my previously non controversial streamer display.
You can start with explaining why the guitar she is playing is so special, perhaps that helps ......
The ND555 also makes this one very nice, details are stunning, tonality is spot on. With the playing of this guys - it might even convince people who hate string quartets...
Have been listening to this repeatedly over the weekend, why, it even makes my humble NDX 1sr gen sound fab!

Since when is a £2,000 + streamer humble?

You should also try these two.
The recordings are stunning!
Here, the piano is amazingly captured.
I grew up in the late seventies, and mostly eighties. My parents saved many pennies to buy me an Olivetti M21 (which still works) and a Technics hifi set. I don't know the price of the Technics, but the computer costed 11.000 Dutch guilders, which was an astronomical amount of money in that time. I used the computer until 1995 when I bought my new computer for 6400 Dutch guilders - all the money I saved during my youth.
I have ignored Chinese mass production during my life as much as possible. This Chinese mass production has given us the illusion that consumer products are cheap. But they are not. Like we made the Chinese people dependent on Opium, they repeat the trick and make us dependent on crap. And we choose to do so!
I rather buy an Europe produced Amp for GBP 2000 which was produced by people actually getting a salary and social benefits than an Asian produced mass product.
Since these Amps last decades, I call that humble and beneficial, and cheap in the end.
The point: buying expensive stuff is no problem, as long as one uses it for a longer time or can sell it on.
Doesn't that bring us all together with Naim?

Didn’t yet get to the Chopin one, but the Saint Säens album is indeed great.
Here is for me the ultimate recording. The Ballades and Scherzos by Rubinstein, recorded by RCA Living Stereo in 1959. Downloaded from HDtracks in WAV 24/176.
When artistic quality meets with technical quality at the highest level. ????
I played the Scherzo No 2 on a SanDisk USB during a 555 demonstration recently. Wonderful!

If it helps you could say that it’s a Gibson ES335. If you were caught studying it very closely, you might even say that you’re not certain if, in fact, it’s an ES345 or even an ES355 (I think that might be testing of even the greatest Gibson aficionado with the limited visibility in this picture).

Yes, probably best not to zoom in for fear of disappearing up Ms Gardot's rear end!

I know nothing of this artist.....is it the lady in question or just a album cover photo shoot of a model, if it’s the former....very brave.
Hey children, don’t look at the screen of my nd555!
Hello David
I'll bet this one is better in Hi Rez! Both Sonically and Metadata wise. This would be another reason to upgrade to the ND55!
Bailyhill
Impressive as the ND555 is my vinyl system, for roughly rhe same outlay, hasn’t even come close to being made redundant.

Have just booked tickets to see her perform in November. Having got this album my expectations have been raised considerably.

Gazza - the lady in question, Melody Gardot, sings and plays as good as she looks, as other album covers testify. Well worth researching her music. A very, very talented lady.
