ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

Curiously none of these woman is ugly.  Sweet, sexy, easy and empty music for coffee shops ,supermarkets and elavators, or hifi shows too.

So are you saying sexy women make dull music?

Confused of Chesham.

D'oh, sorry to the OP, again.

Yeah, and there's HungryHalibut posting a Carla Bruni album. What's the world coming to?

I just purchased the album below. The interpretation is very interesting and worth a download. The recording itself is very very good! The clarity is amazing. Each instrument is “seen” at his rightful place.

A good record for the lucky ND555 owners.
It can be downloaded in 24bits / 352kHz.

When I can, I’d rather buy directly from those who did the job of recording. I got it on the 2L label website (google : “2L nordic sound”).

You can also have it on HDtracks in 24bits / 352kHz.

Melody Gardot’s rear is very attractive but the curves of the instruments of a string quartet are not bad either

I love that Carla Bruni album, and she shouldn’t need to apologise for being attractive. Sometimes you want something more stimulating - like Patti Smith last night - and sometimes something that’s relaxing and ‘nice’. I couldn’t listen to Patti all the time, just as sometimes I’ll listen to Bach and sometimes to the Dead Kennedys. Variety is the spice of life. I cannot abide prog, but if others choose to listen to it then that’s great. It’s wrong to dismiss music as somehow inferior. Each to their own.

I have her studio albums and they are very good. But the live album is pretty ropey. It’s a strange choice for a cover certainly. Can you imagine Debbie Harry or Siouxsie Sioux condoning such a cover?

Thanks irregardless of the performance the question is if one can still hear the difference between the 192 and 352khz...

It's ephemeral. You like what you like. That's why music and concert reviews tend to be mostly useless. No need to explain why and no point anyway.

Call me old fashioned and sexist but a bit of sweet, sexy, syrupy old jazz sung by a husky voiced,  beautiful women certainly does it for me and in the elevator,  stop it French Rooster  I'm going to have to go and have a lie down.....

Well, that’s not abvious. I believe that with a very good system the overall hearing experience might be bettered. Our earing is much more sensitive to “granularity” then one could imagine. I remember reading a paper about that. Unfortunately I can’t find the reference.

But would I be able to spot the 352 kHz record in an A/B test? I don’t think so. Well, my system isn’t revealing enough and I believe it’s more about an overall experience. Not something like having more details, but rather how those details are presented.

Completely disagree Harry. I’m not hearing anything insipid here! Of course you are entitled to your view, but right now this album is feeding my love of music to perfection.

If the 555 has been showing same album cover for several days, you think a reboot by shutting off power supply would help this correct itself ?

One of the characteristics of a good system is that it make anything sound good, because it communicates the information that really matters. I don't have so many "bad" sounding albums nowadays.

That surprises me Harry, because In my (Short) experience the ND555 is a ruthless revealer of a bad recording, as it should be. If it ain’t good to begin with, the system can’t make it sound any better.

I'm sure it's different for everyone. Stuff that I used to find difficult to listen to now seems easier, because I'm more involved in the arrangement, structure, interplay, instrumental timbre, timing, etc. Some turds are unpolishable. I've got albums where I can hear the distortion. I don't need a spectrograph. Nothing can save material like that and the more you resolve it, the worse it sounds. But these are few and far between. The majority of my legacy "difficult" material resolves into more sense and enjoyment as it gets fed into more revealing sources, particularly sources that can time and hold a tune. It's surprising (to me anyway) how many can not.

???? HARRY,....Totally agree with, with a better source you get the effect you describe.... without exception.

Not everyone finds the same type of woman sexy and attractive e.g to me some stereotypes are over-hyped.  But indeed a person’s appearance bears no relationship to how beautifully they make music, or whether any two people will agree on whether the music is good.
