ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

Each to their own...

Curiously none of these woman is ugly.  Sweet, sexy, easy and empty music for coffee shops ,supermarkets and elavators, or hifi shows too.

Call me old fashioned and sexist but a bit of sweet, sexy, syrupy old jazz sung by a husky voiced,  beautiful women certainly does it for me and in the elevator,  stop it French Rooster  I'm going to have to go and have a lie down.....

I would more like to be with these women in the elevator....

I'm very sorry to say that the chances of this happening for you and I is very small in fact non existent  maybe in our dreams though.

I just wanted to say that I prefer to imagine being in an elavator with one of these women than listening to their insipid music.

But as you said, there is no chance for me , like for you, to meet such artists in an elevator.

Does this sound any good on the ND555 ?

Seen her a few times live and can report that her behind is not that large, being more slimmer and snake hipped. I think they must have tampered with that other image.

Apologies for diverting further from the original topic, I wonder what Be Bop Deluxe's album, Sunburst Finish, would look like - sorry, I mean sound like - on an ND555?

Hmmm, perhaps it’ll sound like Roxy Music playing cover versions of the songs?

Melody Gardot isn't my favourite singer of that type Norah Jones however is an extremely talented and beautiful singer songwriter as is Sade. Perhaps Melody management team said it's mostly middle aged men that buy your music get your thrupnees and your a*** out and we will sell shed loads and of course it will look great on an ND555..

Good call Richard, mine was installed on Friday and has been listened to and left playing ripped CDs on repeat for over 48 hours.

I did my first serious listening yesterday evening playing Melody Gardot, Shelby Lynne,Mary Black, Frances Black,Amy Wadge and others.

What can I say that others have not said, Naim have certainly nailed it with the ND555.

A true credit to Naim Audio indeed.

Oh, I just found some really nice albums covers with reference quality recordings for testing on the ND555. Maybe not....

I keep asking the Tidal performance of the 555, I am hoping that it would be par to downloads/rips

any tests?

Online streaming inevitably has a more convoluted path, and so is subject to more challenges and risk of degradation from whatever cause, so might not ever match the best that can be achieved with locally stored music.

Maybe a 13k streamer came up with new solutions.... if I can stream 4K Dolby atmos with a couple hundred Dolar Apple TV, why not a simple flac as good as the stored?

Hi Emre,

I already eluded to this. And as expected I still prefer the locally stored versions. More depth, soundstage, relaxed feeling, tonality. For me it’s also the aspect that I have a Melco to compete with streaming, which is already more difficult to beat than a normal NAS.

And can you be sure that every pixel of every frame of a movie streamed online is identical to when played locally?

Quite apart from that, I suspect there could be quite a lot of of errors before they’d be evident in a film - whereas I think ears are more sensitive to imperfections than eyes.

It’s not bad at all on a 65 TV..... no more silver discs for me

maybe next streamers than, 24/96 streaming as good as Melco

i don’t think it is a very futuristic dream...

I have a 4K Apple TV hooked up to a 4K 65 OLED TV. The video quality of a 4K stream is excellent and only slightly that behind using my Cambridge CHXUD 4K bluray player. Audio is another thing altogether. The Apple 4K compresses the audio, so streaming Dolby sound is pretty average, the same context on a 4K bluray through the CHXUD and a Naim audio system is really night and day. I've compared Roger Water's The Wall for example, and the Apple 4K version sounds very poor compared to the bluray.

Tidal HiFi doesn't compress audio to the same extent for music (it has some form of lossless technology that is beyond me) as the Apple TV 4K does for movies, so I expect it would be better. I've yet to try the free 3 month trail of Tidal you get with a new Naim streamer, but plan to give it a go. I did try it at the dealers and was pretty impressed, though I expect it would be quite as good a streaming from a  direct CD rip on your own system.

No, primarily because Apple do not allow you to download the 4k video to iTunes to stream locally :-) - only SD/720p/1080p versions - a bit of a shame in my view - the 4k stream may well be rate adaptive, but Netflix do it admirably so no reason for Apple not to.

Actually I think data errors would be far more evident in compressed video than in compressed audio but that's a different discussion.

I was wondering when I bought my last 4k Blu Ray to use on the Oppo since Apple 4k has arrived......

Interesting, and could be a thread of its own, but I suspect there are many album covers I'd prefer were not shown on the new streamers' screen for a variety of reasons.

I was not considering anythingbto do with Apple, and what it allows, but the online streamed copy vs playing the Bluray disc at home  (or ripping it and playing the ripped file)

It sounds great. The final track ‘Iemanja’ sounds particularly good to me.  I don’t see her in a Norah Jones, Diana Krall etc. box at all.

I get blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays discs all the time. If you care about sound quality downloading videos is not the way to get good sound. Lossless sound like DTS Master Sound massively better . You should actually know that .

So after all that, Bert reckons locally stored files sound better than streamed. Did anyone’s the comparison? Presumably not, or did I miss the relevant posts?

I belief I am the only one who has posted about the comparison. While I also did a little sample.
