ND555 Impressions
Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018
The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.
I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.
And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.
In the last couple of days I played quite a bit of piano music. And especially with piano I have the feeling that the ND555 has raised the bar significantly with regards to tonal accuracy - compared for me to the NDS. Nice round, earthy sometimes and extreme extension in the higher end.
That was what did it for me Bert, first 3 piano notes on Dr Feelgood from the “Tribal” album by Dr John and 911 state. Definitely raised the bar for me, at least.

Yes I agree on demo I thought the harmonic structure was more realistic .... I think it is a combination of resolution and less distortion....I think the human brain is very sensitive to this.

Does this sound any good on the ND555 ?
Seen her a few times live and can report that her behind is not that large, being more slimmer and snake hipped. I think they must have tampered with that other image.
It sounds great. The final track ‘Iemanja’ sounds particularly good to me. I don’t see her in a Norah Jones, Diana Krall etc. box at all.
I had a listen on this album yesterday and had to confess that it is a bit different from Norah Jones, Diana Krall bunch. More personal and original.
Have a ND555 at home for demo. Will sell my LP12 (almost Klimax level) and all my 900 records and DAC and streamer to get the funding. Enough said.

You could consider ripping the albums, then you can playbthem in perpetuity. (OF course, some could have a higher secondhand value than buying downloads or CDs to rip).
Dealer will take them as a pre-funding....
Three days, and counting .............. Friday can't come soon enough.

Dave, mine wasn't expected till the end of September or early October but it was installed last Friday a very pleasant surprise indeed.
I wonder if they were making the innards without the sleeves, and then just sleeved them when the appropriate quality sleeves turned up?
Gazza, fitting the sleeve is always the penultimate stage of build, just after test and soak (and in the ND555's case probably a wiring check and tweak from R&D). After that it's a quick listen and function test before a clean and then packing.
If there's a wait on sleeves then they will be stuck on their white tiered trolleys, probably in a corner of the soak bay, or off to the side of the test area, until they can proceed further. However, you don't want them waiting there too long - for best efficiency they will have come through test and soak just as the new batch of sleeves arrive. Of course, it doesn't always work to plan, but the idea is to have everything come together "just in time".
Thanks Richard

I just wonder if you might come to regret that?

Usually ripping vinyl sound less good

Albums from 60’s and 70’s will never sound as good as with your lp12. Don’t hurry.

We hope you "come up for air" over the weekend! My productivity around the home has taken a huge hit since the ND555 arrived. Yesterday I got home from work around 6 pm, and from 7-10 pm I just sat on the couch and listened to music.

It was never meant to be taken all in one go, the BBC did it once and I listened through the lot, was feeling quite unhinged by the end of it. Iive and spread over a week or so I get to the end and feel it was too short (not the same feeling at all I assure you).

Mine did this yesterday a power down sorted the problem.
Yes , power down ( or reboot ) and it is now working properly !
musicfan51, I've e-mailed Naim support and they have requested more details of what was happening which I have supplied they will be looking into a fix for this problem.
Coincidentally I went into my dealer today to pay for my ND555 and 555Ps (OUCH) and they have experienced the same with a NDX2.

Yes there is a bug in software displaying album cover and it freezes . They should be able to fix it !
Unfortunately this seems to be carry over from the Uniti series. My Nova had this until recently, perhaps the last update to software cleared it, but it was not clear in the Naim communications? With a ND 555 I hoped they had a handle on this?
I'm sure Bert will be happy if his ND555 screen freezes on the Melody Gardot 'Live in Europe' album cover

STOP! lol
Me, too. Vinyl and TT/phono amp sale funding buying of ND555. I have heard the ND at home with one and two power supplies, and in demo. No doubt in my mind. Friday is arrival day.
