ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

What do you mean by "very advantageous"? I'm not sure I consider £3,000 to be particularly advantageous, but that's all I've been offered for mine.

Nigel......You did ask for the update, brush the dust off yourself and your NDS and be brave and reply or just stick an order in and be done with it????

Hi Clive,

I don't think your dealer is even trying, with the offer you received.

I got considerably more than that for my NDS against the new ND 555, and I've consistently found my dealer to capable of more creative thinking, when it comes to trade-ins.

I don't want to put him on the spot by mentioning figures, but getting in touch with a certain dealership in Chester might well prove worthwhile for you.

Make no mistake about it, do not demo this beast unless you are prepared to splash the cash, as I would imagine very few folks would be able to send it back, having once heard it.

Very much agreed, I think some piggy bank's have had a right hammering since the ND555 was released?

The ND 555 seems to be selling well, better than my dealer was anticipating, which, given it's price point, might be mildly surprising.

Mind you, I can't see many people sending it back after home demo, and as I suggested earlier, with the right dealer, the pain can be lessened considerably for any NDS owners.

Helloooooooo, everybodypeeps!!!!!!!

Been offline for a while, had more pressing matters to attend to .

Well, what is there to say that hasn't already been mentioned by others on here?

The ND 555 has been playing continuously here since my dealer arrived this morning to install it, and ................ Wow, just, Wow............ and, according to my dealer, it will continue to improve over the next few weeks.

Much as I loved the sound of my NDS, this just leaves it in the dust ................ the musicians / singers are "present in the room" to a much greater extent than was previously the case ............. I'm having to supply them with tea and Hobnobs.

Make no mistake about it, do not demo this beast unless you are prepared to splash the cash, as I would imagine very few folks would be able to send it back, having once heard it.

Saying that, any current NDS owners ought to be able to get very advantageous trade-ins from their regular dealers, which, for me, considerably lessened the financial pain.

So, to sum things up, Naim have excelled themselves with the ND 555, and you owe it to yourselves to at least have a listen to one, subject to my caveat above.

(You listening, Nigel?)

LA, LA, LA, LA, LA......PARDON.....LA, LA...

Seriously, congrats Dave.

I am of course considering my options as, like many on here, I have green blood in my veins and I just love my music.

I just don't know whether to consider a pre-loved 552 or ND555 first. It will also be tricky to organise a demo at home of the comparison between the two i.e NDS/552/250 vs ND555/252/250 (all DRs).

I notice that quite a few Dealer demos of the ND555 have been done with the 252, so I assume it must be capable to showing the gulf between the NDS and ND555.

BTW, I don't expect a response from you for some time!

Be an interesting comparison but in my demo experience the 552  as good as it is, could not present a soundstage any where near as convincing from a NDX2/555ps. Whereas the ND555 with 252/SC was unbelievable.......but you need to try yourself. Have fun @nigelb. ????

I must admit the soundstage of the ND555 through a 252 in my system is simply awesome as they say source first?

Posted on: 14 September 2018 by dave marshall

Hi Nigel,

I used to have a 252, and would think that it would be more than capable of demonstrating the qualities of the new streamer, it all depends on where you see the endgame.

I was very happy with my NDS, it remains a superlative streamer, and much as I think the ND 555 is a huge step forward, the decision to move on the new one also had a lot to do with the trade offered by my ever accommodating dealer.

Early days, but I do think Naim have excelled themselves with this piece of kit.

Hope this helps, though it probably doesn't.

ND555 sounds fabulous & fantastic! Once you hear it it is hard to get something less. It can be a budget killer . But it makes you smile to listen to. Really musical .

As part of the ND555 package do you get a superline interconnect???

High quality source is the way to go

You need your own demo...A Naim demo with not my sort of musi did not really engage me.....I commented to wife the carpet could be a type for our hall and stairs. She was happy that I was not engaged ....not my type of music. But as soon as a track we both were familiar with, very interested, she heard the difference. Dealer demo is definitely needed with your own system or a home visit.

The ND555 comes with a Highline as standard.

Congratulations Dave, the NFD555 is really quite wonderful, any genre...any volume “she” takes it all in her stride. Been listening to mine since arrival and couldn’ Be happier. The ND555 just takes that audio window makes it huge and throws it completely wide open (see, i told you i wasn’t any good at articulating what i hear like DB!!!!).

Good work Naim. I did wonder how/when Naim might release updates for the ND555 as they seem to be bang on the money on release....literally!!!

Anyways...back to the music!!!

I think you are correct Dave .

I have about 6 weeks on the clock with my ND555, and it’s really settled in now with a rich and beautiful soundstage. I still get loads of ‘wow’ moments listening to music I have not played before, but I think I have now become accustomed to the ND555 and consider its brilliance to be the new normal. I usually get a bit down at this time of year as the days shorten and longer evenings become the norm, but this year I just find myself listening to more and more great music... this is the true magic of the ND555...

Dave.

Anyone know of a good divorce lawyer? Could try marriage counselling first I guess.

OR,

Remind me, what organs don't you need or only need one of?

ND555 picked-up and installed myself at home this afternoon. Kids very excited about the display. Installation really easy, plug & play.

only problem is that Internet Radio does not show any stations except the pre-installed, so cannot find my local ones (screen says no results). Tidal works and Naim radio works so its surely connected to the internet.

any similar experience or ideas?

thx Lars

You need to use the Naim app to find other stations and use as favourites.

Lars, are you teasing us NDS owners on purpose?

WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE?

Have a ND555 at home for demo. Will sell my LP12 (almost Klimax level) and all my 900 records and DAC and streamer to get the funding. Enough said.

You could consider ripping the albums, then you can playbthem in perpetuity. (OF course, some could have a higher secondhand value than buying downloads or CDs to rip).

Hi T38.45,

I arrived at that conclusion a few years ago ( to move to streaming and sell all the Vinyl as the storage for such is a pain when you have 15,000+ LP's ) BUT I still haven't gotten around to selling them even though I have move countries in the interim ,the LP's are still in storage .I just have a small niggle that I may regret the 45 years of collecting music I know a lot will never be available on digital ,which means purchasing another TT to rip the albums AARGH I just don't know ,One part of me says free up all that money and live it up the other part is reluctant.

Please forget about about ripping 15,000 LPs. Life is too short for that kind of head wrecking. By all means play them on a turntable, but forgive me if I ask you how you could organise them if you took them out of storage, assuming you had the domestic space?

Kars, as Alley Cat posted or you can use the remote press the home button scroll across to Radio and search to required station then press press favourites.

Please note at the moment you cannot edit the sequence of your favourite radio stations this is a work in progress according to Naim and will be sorted in a update.

This discussion about trade in terms & offers serves to underline the wisdom of sticking with one dealer and not 'playing the field' as some folks love to do (I've heard).  So if saving a pound or ten by phoning around lights your candle then go ahead and enjoy.  But it's when it comes to major purchases such as an ND555, that the dealer to whom you've shown loyalty gets to reward you... often big time.

I read above that the offer Dave Marshall's dealer gave him, made the £3,000 offered by another dealer to another forum member look derisory.  So there are surely different relationships going on here.  I know which dealer I'd rather have a good relationship with.  Dave's dealer is renowned for being knowledgable and straightforward... 99% of the time, the price quoted first time is the only price on offer. Haggling isn't in his nature, but as you heard from Dave, when he wants you to own a piece of kit because it actually fits your audio 'journey', he will make it extremely attractive for you to go that way.

And how do I know all this about Dave's dealer?   Well I live near Chester too.

Roger

PS - By the way Dave, the offer he made me wasn't that brilliant,  it was brilliant, but... we must meet for a beer at the next Doubletree event.
