ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

Kars, as Alley Cat posted or you can use the remote press the home button scroll across to Radio and search to required station then press press favourites.

Please note at the moment you cannot edit the sequence of your favourite radio stations this is a work in progress according to Naim and will be sorted in a update.

Sorry should be Lars.

Nigel, you can’t afford a divorce and an ND555. In fact, if you have to hesitate to buy an ND555, you certainly can’t afford a divorce!

I can't speak for any of the other ND 555 new owners, but I do think it worthy of mention that, no matter how woooonderful the  ND 555 is, it's all really down to how much pleasure one get's from one's present setup, Naim or not, and no matter at which level within Naim's offerings one finds oneself.

My first venture into Naim was via second hand, entry level items from that well known auction site, just to see if I would like the signature Naim sound.

Since I decided that Naim's view of how music ought to be presented pretty much matched my own, I was extremely fortunate to make contact with a dealer, (something of a Naim fanboy himself), who understood what I was seeking, and who has consistently guided me on my journey into the rarified atmosphere of 500 Series components.

I write this simply because there must be folks reading this thread, and thinking "how much will I have to spend to enjoy music to the extent that these guys are claiming?"

My advice would be "just enjoy what you are listening to right now", just as I have, at each stage of my journey.

I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but throughout my Naim odyssey, the music has always sound sensational.

This discussion about trade in terms & offers serves to underline the wisdom of sticking with one dealer and not 'playing the field' as some folks love to do (I've heard).  So if saving a pound or ten by phoning around lights your candle then go ahead and enjoy.  But it's when it comes to major purchases such as an ND555, that the dealer to whom you've shown loyalty gets to reward you... often big time.

I read above that the offer Dave Marshall's dealer gave him, made the £3,000 offered by another dealer to another forum member look derisory.  So there are surely different relationships going on here.  I know which dealer I'd rather have a good relationship with.  Dave's dealer is renowned for being knowledgable and straightforward... 99% of the time, the price quoted first time is the only price on offer. Haggling isn't in his nature, but as you heard from Dave, when he wants you to own a piece of kit because it actually fits your audio 'journey', he will make it extremely attractive for you to go that way.

And how do I know all this about Dave's dealer?   Well I live near Chester too.

Roger

PS - By the way Dave, the offer he made me wasn't that brilliant,  it was brilliant, but... we must meet for a beer at the next Doubletree event.

There's some streaming event scheduled at the Doubletree sometime over the next couple of months, so, once the dates are firmed up, (I'll speak with Geoff on Tuesday), we'll make that a date ........... after all, as I've been forced to point out on a public forum, you do owe me a beer.

Thanks for the sanity check, from a mere New Nova owner, enjoying it very much from my earlier UC2/NAP100 - very happy with that. Following the thread, it’s very knowledgeable and fun. But happy to smile and toe tap with what I have and still support the family with, what is, already a significant investment.

I have “the beast” on loan for the weekend. I really wasn’t expecting it to be this good. Only a few evenings back I was wondering how the NDS could be bettered. What I perceived to be a speaker problem has been quite simply addressed through slotting in the 555 - much more control and dynamics, the speakers have simply come to life. The first hour of smiling has now become dread as I face convincing the wife that we simply have to get this (it is after all cheaper than replacing the speakers :-) ).

As I said a while back on this very thread... "These home demos of ND555 are nothing short of wreckless behaviour".   It seems to be getting out of hand

Home demo makes it hard to say “no” cause it sounds so good !

It has been said before but I feel I should reiterate: do not demo unless you are willing to buy. Stick to this simple rule and everything will be fine and dandy

My mistake was thinking that after an underwhelming dealer demo I was in safe territory giving it a quick go at home.

This is starting get serious, as I am starting to think about this, and I am in the USA, so hope for a home demo, but certainly rethinking about the NDX2 decision that was made a month ago or so.  Perhaps should bite the bullet?  Now that I have solved the limiting problem of using a DAC V1.

Similar for me, though it was more the Naim demo , choice of music and speaker...dealer demo with my system and music was fine.

I have this rule about driving cars.  Thought I was in safe territory a couple of times, only to succumb.  Other times, it was just a standard buy.  Last time I was in the market for a Porsche, ended up with two BMW's one for me and one for my wife.  It worked out.

100% ................and , just to conform with the present day PC world in which we increasingly find ourselves ............... "I have no interest, directly or otherwise in the dealership in question"!

They just always seem to come up with the right answers.

Hope you're reading this Geoff ............. sorry, cheap shot, I should know better.

Well lets see, If I take the cost of the NDX2 and add aprox $5k, I am there on the ND555. And my broker just informed me that I have to make an RMD, (Required Minimum Distribution from a 401K) and its paid for. Now I just have to swing the PS555. Lets see, trade in the Dac V1, and then ..... Not so far fetched. Then my system is done. My wife did last week say that I should have the best equipment to drive my speakers! How much is a SH PS555 DR? I have to give this some thought. I can afford this, I did not realize how close I was. I was thining in terms of 20K$. Its less. My knees are buckling!!! Bailyhill

To quote an extremely well known American sports goods manufacturer "just do it".

So, if you are starting from scratch, what’s the minimum you need to go with the ND555 then, excluding speakers? How much Cha-ching?

So many people devising schemes and mathematical calculations to swing a ND555. Bit like an addict.

As I have said before, Naim should really be setting a support mechanism for us junkies.

Just say NAA (Naim Audio Anonymous).
