ND555 Impressions
Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018
The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.
I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.
And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

You are in for a treat - the musical performance of this is very special.
All my App problems are put into perspective of the very special musical delivery from this device. I'm using it a lot and finding music I did not play so much now works better. Live concerts and other simple live recordings are especially well rendered.

...that last little experiment made me realize how much the leads run-in. When starting with an already run-in set of 555PS and their leads perhaps it gives things a leg-up with the ND555 run-in. I hope!
DB.
No choice I am on new leads so will have to run in, though I will be getting ex demo 555 ps do at least that’s run in, as will be the 252/supercap. Can,t wait.....

You have made a huge upgrade - I think the run-in aspect will be dwarfed by all the other changes.

Gazza, you are in for a real treat my ND555 and 555Ps are coming up to a month old and have been running on repeat overnight and sounding superb.
I think I'll be able to take the running in sticker off shortly !!
Gazza and DB, when did you order yours? I placed my order on 28 August, but so far have heard nothing.
Enjoy your new player Gazza as we all keep saying it is rather special in so many good ways.
Darke Bear posted:...another 'feature-fault' - the ND555 display is stuck on a picture of Gregorian Chant album now, no matter what else I select!
The App shows the correct Album picture, but the ND555 is the one that is 'stuck'.A nice picture, but if it does not clear and show the actual playing album artwork or even the default blank 'music' symbol then not a good sign.
DB.
yup, that’ll be me in your garden DB with my ND555 remote messing with your ND555
Can't recall exactly when but it was near the end of August - I've definitely waited at least 4 weeks so I deserve mine!
But I was ready for another week wait as the third batch of cases was still faulty when I last asked, so perhaps they finally have the production line up and going again with new cases.

Well that at least identified that problem!

All good things come to those who wait - and I have waited 4 1/2 weeks so far! I think I'll call my dealer tomorrow to see what's happening. That said, if it's a matter of waiting to get a perfect anodised finish, then I'll be happy to wait.
Although when I had the loan model here I didn't experience any of the app issues that people have been reporting, I can see that if I do, there's only 48 pages (so far) to wade through to find the workarounds!
I am at 5 week mark :-(
Bert Schurink posted:David O'Higgins posted:Bert Schurink posted:After all the praise of the sound of this fantastic machine, some huge dissapointment about the app. It get’s really annoying if you are faced with issues every time you use the machine....
1. Multiple times a day you can’t use the app, and you are forced to swipe it away and start new.
2. Multiples times a day it comes on the room selection screen. I only have the ND555 in this network, and it happens when being busy with selecting something new or searching something new.
3. You can’t select a direct move back to your server if you have been listening to Tidal. When you click on the server it always switches back to Tidal. And the only way to achieve the result without newly starting the app is to push multiple times the back button and cancel selections, to get back to your original selection before you started your Tidal session.
So all in all a disgrace for such a high quality streamer.
Just go to Roon, and forget the heartache!
I don’t know how that should solve the issues I mentioned, as I am not experiencing them with my Muso....
Bert, I have spent the last three weeks trying to use the Naim app, as I am setting up a new Muso for use by my daughter, and I have been driven to distraction! Rooms found, rooms not found, rooms disappearing, rebooting, restarting network etc. I’m not a novice at this, but I despair at times. Roon gets over all these problems, but unfortunately my daughter lives in a valley in rural Co.Cork, so Internet is not available and the Naim app is the only way for me to give her, My son-in law, and our three ggrandchildren , access to the music I grew up with.
Hopefully, when I go down there next week to deliver the Muso and a Qnap (to be connected together via a Gigabit switch using Ethernet over to their router), their simple network will play ball for them, but I really don’t understand how anyone can put up with the vagaries of the Naim app in more complex situations.
Should have read ‘Ethernet over mains’!
What is Ethernet over mains? (Which actually is a misnoma, as Ethernet is not sent over the mains)..using such consumer kludge network bridges is going to play potentially havoc with Naim network audio which is designed for either Wifi or Ethernet... other non Ethernet or Wifi options are entirely at consumers risk.
Since OS12 it's not just the Naim app that's been playing up, even Safari has it's moments.
Day 3 seems to be going into a run-in dip in performance, but not awful so far. A 'blunt dullness' over the sound right now. From my experience with the Burndies yesterday I now understand how much they also run-in.
But apart from right now, yesterday evening performance was very special - very open wide big dynamic sound and very immersive. But today blunt and shut-in by comparison.
DB.
Ours had a bit of a slump also but it seemed to pick up fast. We have new Burndies. It never occurred to me to factor them in, but they should be. Can't say the run in has been much of a big deal here, although the player has certainly been through some dips and crests.
Well I will keep this post short as many have commented on how special the ND555 sounds. Andy from Signals removed my trusty Nova and did a great job installing the ND555/555ps with a 252/Supercap. Straight out of the box it sounded every bit as good as I remembered it to be from the demo.
My wife has not shown any interest in the music since I took it up last year. Last night she sat with her iPad for 3 hours playing music, rather odd, but nice.....commented on how real and natural the music sounded. I had a problem with ND555 finds the albums but did not display artwork in the App. I deleted the App that I used with the Nova and reinstalled.....no issues since.
Having been to a few demos of the ND555,they really do not do it justice IMO.
Congratulations on the new arrival, Gazza. I'm sure you will enjoy many hours rediscovering your music collection.
Now, I wonder when mine will arrive...

Gazza, that is one helluva an upgrade you have done there! Congratulations.
I hope you will continue to post your impressions as the system beds in and burns in. Hope to meet up with you at the East Audio Show.

Not so odd. It might be novelty value. However, when people don't bother listening to music because they've no interest, or maybe because they've always got something else to do, the root cause can be that they simply don't like how it sounds and/or don't find it engaging enough. Been there.

Congratulations - good it all went well!
Mine is going through some run-in effects but they are not too bad - a bit flat today (day 4) at times with bass a bit 'thuddy' (if that makes sense). I expect it all to stabilize after ten days or so by usual run-in experience, then begin to get a lot better after three weeks, so I shall see.
DB.
Listening to Alicia Keys rip and the artist is in the room with me. Not having any App issues with the ND555, so far. The grip on percussion, piano and vocals is .....just why I bought this.....Piece of Hifi that connects me to my earlier concert going life, music in general. Something special for me.....perhaps not everyone. And that’s just fine........nice one HQ Salisbury.
