ND555 Impressions

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 26 July 2018

The Beast will arrive and will be installed tomorrow morning in my system. So I thought it was a good moment to open up a thread with the fist experiences, also giving others the possibility to share their first impressions with the beast.

I feeel a bit like a little child who has his birthday tomorrow. I assume that even while it will be nice weather during the weekend that I will be a spending a lot of hours with my system.

And as expected my car will not arrive before the ND555.

Yes it is difficult to articulate. I think "grip" best describes it for me. I wish you big fun.

Interstingly when I moved from a 272 to the NDS - I did get quantitatively more bass which was sufficient enough for me to have to change the speaker location....

Harry posted.

ND555 gives increased bass information, clarity, separation,. texture/timbre, tightness and tunefulness, without adding to the weight. If anything a small degree of bloat has been lost.

Very much the same in my system the grip and control of the bass is much improved similar simalarities when I changed the 250dr to a 300dr, rest assured the bass will not disapoint as will the rest of the ND555 qualities.

Happy listening.

In the context of my system and room - better control and removal of 'any bloom' would be fantastic........... I will feed back later at the weekend...........

Another quick question - with the unit powered on but not playing - does the screen shut down entirely.... so it is entirely blank.......

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Gazza

No it will have the last icon shown ....for example icon for TV on my one, or last cd rip artwork......unless you put into standby which is what I do as I leave the room.

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Richieroo

Oh ...... ok I thought there would be no standby........as this was externally powered....that's a bonus.........does this mean the unit runs cooler in standby???

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Gazza

Not really noticed to tell you the truth, will check later.

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Gazza

Rich, the default auto standby time is 20 minutes, but that can be decreased or increased.....I have it on default currently

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Pcd
Richieroo, default screen settings as e mailed to me by Naim last week trust this is of help.
On the default (out of box) settings, the display is switched off after 20 minutes when the ND 555 is not playing, and after 120 minutes when it is playing. This is the default expected behaviour and cannot be disabled. The reason for this is to preserve the life of the display as with all displays they have a finite 'on time'.

The additional setting in Settings >> Display >> "Display off while playing" changes the display timeout whilst playing from 120 minutes to 10 seconds and is there as a user preference for customer who would prefer to see the artwork initially but then have it hidden.
Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Gazza

If you hit the remote “on” or or the Nd555 “on” button once it goes into standby......still detectable in the App. If you hold the same buttons down for 3 seconds or more......into deep sleep.....not seen in the App, and will reboot when you press the “on” button.

I cannot see the Display option under Settings.

Go to settings on the ND555 home screen select the  display option and select the option of screen on or off during replay.

The analyse versus listen versus enjoy models have been discussed at length and the advent of the ND555 won't change peoples' methods and approaches. I try not to over analyse using "test" recordings. If you listen for changes you will likely hear changes. I think most of us tend to mix and match. I've got my favourite recordings which I tend to gravitate to but I try not to be an oscilloscope.

We should each use whatever method(s) best suits us. Our ND555 has peaked and toughed somewhat, but not hugely.  It's so far past the NDS it's almost unreal, and this was the case from when it was first plugged in. Maybe I've got good mains. maybe my ears are heavily damped. Maybe my system lacks the analytical resolution to highlight these effects? I don't know. But I know what I like. And I know how to get it in spades.

I'll check back in a week or two. If I'm not too busy having fun in the lounge.

@Harry, do you mind me asking which pre/power amp combination you use with the ND555 as it does not appear in your profile.

My flacs have been ripped by DBpoweramp ......... and within the folder for the album...is a jpg named 'folder' this is the artwork. Will the ND555 pick this folder.jpg up and display it ......... is there a required 'format size'?

Can't help on this.

I don't mind at all Nigel. I just don't generally advertise. We use 552DR/500DR.

You can choose between the artwork and tagging info provided by Roon database or your own artwork and tagging info, or a mix.

You can display the remote control interface on a screen computer, on a iPad or on an iPhone. I use the three of them.

I've been through many players, UPnP servers. Roon is head and shoulders above everything I tried.

Thanks Harry. The reason for the question is that I have a chicken and egg dilemma. Which comes first, a ND555 (currently NDS/555DR) or 552 (currently 252/SuperCapDR)?

I am not looking for answers on here as I know I have to do the demo legwork and answer that dilemma for myself. It is just helpful to hear which amplification folk are using the ND555 with.

Posted on: 16 October 2018 by Gazza

Nigel......I think you need to get some Layer Pellets for the addition of those chickens......????

People would normally argue source first. But in this case it’s a more difficult questions. I think the 252 would also amplify the ND555 in a great manner, but it will refrain a bit on the magic the 552 can bring to the game. I think you would loose a bit on boogie factor. And I almost would argue the two need to go together....

A 2nd thought which goes through my mind. 252 would work well in balance with a NDX2 on steroids or a NDS. The ND555 I would argue requires a 552, to fully swing.... it’s Like a kind of multiplication...
