So I've bought a 555PS DR ..

Posted by: Dan.S on 02 August 2018

..For my 272 on the end of a 250DR. Got it for a really good price, the seller was gracious enough to even accept a pretty low offer after assuring him the unit will be much loved (I hope) and flipping it is out of the question.

Due to moving countries and houses, I wont be able to have a listen to the system for at least another couple of months as it sits in boxes at the moment. But that's not a reason why you shouldn't comment on what kind of treat I'm gonna be in for.

Congratulations Dan

I’ve just purchased a 555 non DR for my 272/250DR system. The uplift in performance is incredible and you’ll love it I’m sure.

The 555DR will reveal how excellent both your 272 and 250DR are. There will be no regrets, and you play more music than ever before because the music is so much more involving. Well done!

I do have a question. As the unit comes with no Burndy cables, I'll need to score one myself. Which one do I need? Can I use the standard XPS one or it needs to be the specific to 555 output 1? Thanks.

You’ll need an s-xps Burndy Dan

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by wenger2015

Also the S-XP’s Burndy will need a massage before installing...

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by Dan.S

The only output on the XPS has 11 pins, while Output 1 on 555 has 13 pins. Am I not supposed to buy a 13pin Burndy cable?

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by Finkfan

Hi Dan

As far as I’m aware, the S-XPS has the right number of pins in the right configuration for the 272

For a NAC-N272 to connect with a 555PS you'll need an XPS or preferably an S-XPS Burndy cable.  Do not try to use any other Burndy cable.

Thank you gents, that's what I'm going to look for. Hopefully, it will be the same cable required to power the NAC 372 as well.

Anyway, cant wait to put everything together and report back.

When you have your first listen, I fully expect you to use the 'b' word (blimey!).

Enjoy, don't think you will be dissappointed.

No wonder there's no 555 PSU left on the used / ex demo market everyone on here is bloody snapping them up!

Enjoy sounds like a blast with the 555 attached.

Never thought I would ever own a 5i, let alone anything from the 500 series to be honest..

Congrats. I also had the opportunity to purchase a pre-loved 555 PS non DR for my 272 and the transformation is incredible.

The 555PS is a proper supply- you should love it

I seem to remember a forum member trying a 555PS on his 272 but preferred the XPSDR. I sure would like to see him post about that again to help me get over this new lust for a 555PS.

That was GRAEMH...and the poor guy appears to be alone in preferring the XPS John,I told you the 555 was the way to go,start saving buddy!

Everytime I glance over to my 272/XP5XS/250DR I hear a whisper 555, 555, 555 !

Posted on: 02 August 2018 by hungryhalibut

Based on my experience of using an XPSDR on my 272 for two years, and a 555DR for nine months, I’d say that the improvement from XPS to 555 is significantly greater than from no power supply to XPS. Which won’t help Hifiman one iota!

When I got my 555 last year there were a number of people suggesting pretty strongly that it was a rather stupid thing to do, on the basis that the power supply costs nearly twice as much as the box it’s powering. I’m pleased people have tried it for themselves and that they are satisfied with what the 555 does. The 272/555 really is extraordinarily capable, and a very viable and sensible option in my view.

Especially given the 15year service interval for the 555 which makes a s/h one a better proposition.

This is what I did; the 555DR was then only 11% more expensive than the 272.
But oh my! is it worth it! - brings the 272 into NAP300 teritory in SQ terms.

What does adding a powerline do for the 555??

Pretty much the same thing it does for a 'bare' source.
