Review of the NDX2 in Hifi News

Posted by: fernar on 02 August 2018

Just read the review of the NDX2 in this months Hifi News... good write up which gave it a score of 85% (so very good).

There was a comment of how the NDX2 performs vs the NDS... (with a 555 PS DR) - an the conclusion was that while the NDX2 has a bit more in detail, it looses on 'boogie factor' vs the NDS...

So I think all in all, the NDX2 is right up there with the NDS...... but clearly the NDX has additional new function and colour screen which may or may not be important...

I am really looking forward to demoing the NDX as soon as my dealer gets his hands on one.... should be interesting to listen to

It will be interesting to see what happens the NDS second-hand values, hopefully not a CD555 that has gone so bad it's not far off cds2 money ☹

cd555 is more risky to buy, because of optical lens or other mechanisms that can fail.  If a second hand nds can cost less than new ndx2, it may be tempting.

I read the article yesterday. Nobody's ears but yours are worth trusting before parting with money, but the comics are a fun read (for the most part)  and like any other maladjusted person with an ego, I love it when someone I don't know, whth ears I can't hear through, loves something that I own.

Interesting take away for me is the opinion that the NDX2 is maybe a bit polished and reserved, whereas the NDS is more of a Naim rocker. I have always thought the NDS tended to be a bit on the poised and smooth side of down and dirty.  Different folks, different ears.

Anyone reading that review is going to really want to factor in a 555PS DR as well though, taking a £5K player up to approaching £12K.....

You are right that one should trust ones own ears - but the review was interesting and I find that HFN is better review magazine vs some of the others out there...

But it's interesting that the newer technology in the NDX2 has advanced to a level that it provides similar performance to a much higher cost technology from the past (and additional function). Additionally the NDX2 does this without the internal mechanical isolation that is built into the NDS.

This is not the same as it is for mechanical devices such as turntables and I guess to a large extent CD players, where the cost of the mechanical 'bit' cost more to produce as time goes on..

I will be looking to try out the NDX2 as soon as my dealer can get me one....

David, it will be interesting to hear what the NDX2 sounds like with a XPSdr power supply as I would imagine this is going to be the starting point for a lot of owners of the original NDX like myself.

Interesting times ahead in September when my NDX2 should land.

You will not be disappointed, if you cannot afford the 555ps with it.....suggest you don,t try it.

Back in the 80s when I ran my CD94 without the optional CDA94, I didn't feel short changed because at it's price point the bare CD94 was world class. Ditto the CD5 without a HiCap and the CDX2 without XPS2, and the DAC without XPS2 and the DAC/XPS2 without upgrading to 555PS and the NDS/555PS before upgrading to twin 555PS.

From all accounts the NDX2 is a bit of a bargain at £5K. If adding a PS can elevate its performance to that of a £12K source, isn't it a good thing that such an upgrade will be available to those who want it and can afford it? I don't think anybody is going to feel hard done by with a bare NDX2, assuming they auditioned it properly. If it sounds fantastic for £5K and £5K is all you want to spend on a streamer, the cost of an upgrade is irrelevant. As was the case with my CD94 and my CD5 and my CDX2 and my DAC and my NDS. If at some point it becomes relevant you are most fortunate. And by no means compelled if you think it not worth it.

Harry I didn't say or mean that adding a 555PS DR would take the performance up to a £12K source. I meant it takes the price up to a £12K source. What an XPS DR does is indeed interesting as PCD says....

Sorry David. Not trying to poke you with a stick. Just widening it out a bit.

I was eager for an NDX2 review and read this one with interest. I still seem to miss the following:

-  no "apples to apples" comparison against the "old" NDX. Apart from the screen (which i don't care for) and the better WiFi connectivity (which was not really tested) what do you get in terms of SQ?

- I wanted to have a comment on whether the NDX2 is more "compatible" with the top power supply (there were several comments to the effect that the first generation NDS was a bit un-balanced with A PS555). The review implicitly (by enthusing on how the PS555 improves the bare NDX2) addresses this point but I would have prepared a more direct comparison and conclusion .

chasing improvements it different may be a tad better BUT what a increase in cost   cant say it was a massive difference  .
