ND555 - It's Here...
Posted by: DaveBk on 02 August 2018
Thanks to James and Henry of Tom Tom Audio, my ND555 has just been installed and sounds fantastic straight out of the box! We're just leaving it for an hour over lunch before settling down to a proper listening session. Pictures of the install will follow...

BTW, congratulations on your aquisition Dave, I am of course jealous

I discussed placement with James, who made the point that with the NDS, the best option was to place this in the middle, with the 552 on top. With my medium Fraim levels, I already have more space than usual, so I’ve always placed the NDS on top. I will let the ND555 bed in a bit before tinkering further...
I have the 500 on the lowest shelf, nd above that and then 552 above that...
Are you using standard or medium levels Bert?
Congratulations DAVEBK , you have an exceptional system and the ND555 will no doubt work beautifully with those Focals..... Enjoy

Medium levels, for 500 and ND555 Standard Level for 552.
By a stroke of good fortune for me I was able to have my ND555 installed yesterday, as Signals had one in for another customer who because of some building work going on at home has delayed delivery. Sounding wonderful straight out of the box on my 2X555PS and Super Lumina interconnect.
Michael, what does the extra power supply add to such a great product. I have only heard the Signals demo with one PS. Keep the updates coming, I will call in on my way to a short break to discuss next steps with Alistair for my own situation. Happy listening.
Gazza the extra supply gives more of everything as you would expect, so need I say more. Having said that using just one supply, the ND555 is delightful and a step up from the CD555. I was just fortunate to have two supplies available to give icing on the cake. The next step to wring the utmost performance from the ND555 would seem to be a Melco music server, but that can wait a while!
Not sure where you are but if you are ever in the Norwich area you are welcome to drop in for a listen.
I am up there next week, but with the wife for a short break. On our way to Norwich we are calling in to have a chat with Alistair and Andy on our next steps. Thank you Michael for the kind offer which I will bear in mind for another time, but will decline this time. Keep us all posted, fascinating stuff, and much appreciated.
Gary
Welcome to the owners club Michael. I imagine there will be quite a few more joining over the next month or so! It's interesting what you say about the second 555PS, perhaps something I will consider, but my next upgrade will be to go from 300DR to 500DR when funds permit.
I had a hour with the ND555 this morning, playing some Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan as I haven't really listened to much in the way of female vocalists so far. Suffice to say it also excels in this genre, with beautiful natural tone, air and balance. Wonderful.
It's my daughter's 19th Birthday BBQ shortly, so I will have to resist further sonic exploration until tomorrow.

Why Melco vs core?
I had a home dem of the Melco and liked what it did. No experience of the Core as yet but not ruling anything out at this stage!

Come on Andy and Alastair the gauntlet has been laid down...
I popped into Signals a week last Friday on my way to Felixstowe.
Despite the fact that it was 35 degrees C, I was pleased to find the pair of them dressed in full length trousers and long/short sleeve shirts.
Men of a certain age at work should, and I count myself in this, not be showing too much (blue/white) flesh.

Your welcome Michael. That was my one as busy building and can wait a few days!

???? Anyone,...? I do not know if anyone compared Core against Melco, but it would be interesting to hear if someone made such a comparison.

Ah I didn’t realise it was to be yours Richard. Well when your building is out of the way and you take delivery you are certainly in for a treat. Thanks for letting me jump the queue!
Hi all, just checking something... I've sat down to listen for a bit then realised I'd left my iPad upstairs. Never mind I thought, I'll just browse using the remote. I can't find a way to select a uPnP source using the remote and screen, and was wondering if this was just me being dim, or just a feature that is not yet implemented? Looking at the online help, there is a small line - "To view all music sources, including network servers you will need to use the Naim app" so it looks like a feature that's not yet available. Thoughts?

Just tried using the remote, when I press the Home button the options come up, but when you select Inputs uPnP is not listed just iRadio and Spotify in my case.
If the ND555 is using the same streaming platform as the new Unitis then Naim are not going to enable upnp browsing via the remote. They've been asked and said a definite no!
Wow - never thought I'd get to contribute to a 500 series thread
Same here - home screen has Spotify, iRadio, USB and Bluetooth as directly accessible inputs. The input select option also lists the Digital 1-4, plus Preamp inputs iRadio Bluetooth and Spotify. Using the app, you can disable the digital inputs and they are then no longer listed. 99% of the time I use the app, so it’s not an issue, just checking if everyone else has the same. I guess this may be improved in later firmware releases.

Sorry, hadn’t seen this when I posted.... the streaming platform is common, but can’t see why Naim would be so adamant that they will not allow browsing via the remote, especially as the ND555 comes with a nice new Zigbee one.
The other thing I find annoying is there is no option to edit radio presets as you can on the Qb and the old NDX (as far as I can fathom out). On the app for those devices you just scroll to the bottom of the list where ‘Edit presets’ is to be found - that option is not there on the ND555 radio list. Therefore you cannot re-order or rename them on the new device. Perhaps in future updates they will make it possible or am I missing something?
i just read a review of the CH Precision c1/d1/x1 dac, drive, streamer . It is a state of the art swiss dac, recently produced, for around 60k !
The interesting information is that it uses the same “ old” burr brown 1704 dac as the nd555.
job in progress then. naim never did this in the past
