Nac 62 preamp phono cards

Posted by: Hoss on 03 August 2018

Hi all I have a nac 62 peered with a nap 90 these were bought in the early eights in New Zealand.

My problem is I took my system into the agent to have it serviced. It has never missed a beet and never been looked at the conector cable did need looking at it was still working just needed to have some shrink wrap on it but this was not done . Was advised to recap system,I asked for quote on job never got one but they still recaped my system. .I had the system back for about two days then the right hand phono board cut out and or sounded very distorted .It has been back to the agent five time and the problem still persists. The agents have given me every excuse under the sun and there final words to me is that I am being unreasonable and that the system is 40 years old what do I expect  WELL ( to have the system fixed, Naim  is the RoIls Royce or should I say (Bently )of HiFi equipment and it should run for years to come. I had hoped to pass it on to my son when I go.he love the Naim  sound ) I have lost all faith in the agents here and was hoping to get some advice on how I can fix my delemer. In the 39 years I have owned the system I have not even takin the unit apart so my knowledge of the circuitry in nil. Also the system gave me not problems in all that time. I have spoken to Naim and have as yet got no help.

Hoss, are you in touch with Chris Murphy at NA Distributors?  He knows just about all there is to know about Naim and a great guy  as well. I'd be amazed if it's something he's unable to resolve.

The cards can sometimes come loose in shipping (if shipped in situ) so worth checking that they are properly seated  and all connectors are properly inserted.

Yes he was the person that recaped the system and has to my knowledge be trying to fix the amp problem. NA Distributor are not able to be contacted and do not return phone message .I have been trying to get hold if them for months.

Sounds like the phono contacts in the selector switch are in need of a clean. Not an easy thing to do properly, but spraying with contact cleaner should fix it.

Quickly selecting / deselecting phono should provide a short term solution.

That doesn't sound like Chris at all. I shall make enquiries.  I would suggest you try once more as he's a most reasonable fellow  and I'm sure he would like to see it resolved.

If it's the ALPS remote selector switch at fault then that's a trickier as there are no replacements available any more - Naim's stock of parts was exhausted a while back.  Contact cleaner can give a temporary fix but it may not last.

Thanks Richard as Far as contacting the Naim agent here in N Z I will not hold my breath. If after trying for months and no contact the only way would be for someone who is in contact with him to give the word to contact me.

Richard if I am understanding you right, if it is the selector switch is stuffed then I will have to say goodbye to my system if I can't get a second hand one that is working. Would that be right.

I have looked over some post about this problem there are a few. How can I tell whether it the switch or the phono card ??

Thank you FatCat for your input . What is contact cleaner and how is it used on the switch . This  woodturner can do anything with wood but electronics are out of my league, is it an involved process.

Best way to find out is to have Chris tell you...  It may well be that the switch is indeed beyond repair, in which case...

There are no new switches out there AFAIK - certainly the ones Naim bought as an end of life buy are, AFAIK, now exhausted. I'm told there is a way of carefully opening up the switch and carefully cleaning it, which can extend its life a bit, but there's not guarantee (depends on how worn), it's a bit of a bodge (easy to ruin it forever) and it's something best left to the brave DIYer - certainly it falls outside of the AUP of this forum.

Hoss,  I heard back from Chris Murphy - he is aware of a NAC62 that was serviced and sorted, but is unaware of any attempts to make contact with him since.  I suggest you get in touch with him again.  Contact details available on the website.  I think fairest to close this thread now.
