What’s your pride and Joy

Out of all your boxes, what would be the one you would take with you as you scramble from your burning house?

Im torn between my Nac 52 and my 08 SL2 speakers. If it came to the crunch I’d collect the SL2 speaker. Probably impossible to replace them, just truly beautiful and only 300 or so made.

How about you??

Actually, I really like the sofa in out listening room, and it wouldn't be that easy to replace. Also, as it's on the first floor, it would cushion the landing when we jump after it much better than the NDX would.

If only for portability: my vintage Koetsu Urushi. Otherwise the Graham tonearm, which is, for me, still the one to have. I foolishly sold my first one and after a detour ended up with something called Arrow or similar . When a NOS Series 2 appeared on the interweb, I jumped and never looked back.

The NAS drive, no only does it have all my music files it also holds a data backup of my PC, and I can almost completely restore all my programmes and data to a new PC from it.  For the hardware Insurance will take care of replacing that.

Surely you have an offsite backup Huge. Quite seriously, I backup at least once a month and keep a copy in another property, I know a lot of people who do reciprocal backup hosting (I.e. Andy keeps Betty’s backup disc and vice versa). It seems extreme, but in our professional IT lives we’d never think of having the backups in the same building (or in some cases in my career same flood plain/power company).

Can understand why Mulberry with your Koetsu.

Thats one legendary Koetsu you have there.Better than the Red signiture I would imagine.

One of the biggest audio Wow moments was hearing a Koetsu Onyx at a HiFI show in Brighton in 1984 or 5.It was playing on a Oracle with a Air Tangent parallel tracking tone arm.I think the amps where Audio Research SP10 pre and Krell monoblocks and Magneplaner electrostatics.I have never heard cymbals sound so metallic and such a three dimensional soundstage. One of the best rooms at the show. The Naim room was magic as well.Active Sara's with 4 -135's and a LP12 Ittok Asak T.No way as accurate as The Absolute Sounds room.....but so engaging and exciting.

I would grab my Dartzeel NHB 108 power amp as it 's on the floor and weighs 30 kg so no getting behind the rack.

Indeed I do, but the NAS is a more frequent / recent backup than the off-site one; I'd actually use both together to reconstruct my digital life.

Which reminds me, I've just rebuilt the PC (now Ryzen 5 2600, WX2100, 3GHz RAM, SSDs, Win 10 Pro FPP), so I need to refresh the off-site backup.

Ah of,course, good point.

Hard call. Music collection has to be the primary thing, whether I grab the Mac Mini with it all on, NAS drive with backups and other things. I’d love to take the speakers as they’d be a hassle and challenge to replace, but at two people to carry each one they’d likely not be realistic. Other challenger is Dave because although readily replaceable if the insurance company pays up, if I managed to grab it with the attached Mac Mini all I’d need is a decent pair of headphones and I could enjouy high quality music while living in hotel/caravan/friend’s spare room, awaiting rebuilding of house.

My 552. One box under each arm.

Being disabled,it was hard enough to disconnect/remove my nac 202 and replace it with a nac 282 yesterday. So NONE of it makes it out with me. Now I do have an "old school" portable that would be near impossible to replace and it is "only " 19 lbs. before the 8 or 9 "D" cells are fitted (9 if you want it to light up). Anyone care to hazard a guess? Btw,the fm pulls in more stations than my nat 05.

Dieter Rams design for braun t-1000 radio (try googling it *g*)

Reckon I'd be grabbing a can of petrol to make sure it really does all go up in smoke, then use whatever the insurance coughs to put towards the next level.

Naim gear is so dinky and light. Should make it out with all of them. Most would survive being thrown out the window.

Maybe my Merlin TSM Black Magic speakers.

These cannot be procured new anymore.

One condition I have is that all the electronics I buy WILL have to dance with the Merlin TSM.

If not.. Then the electronics go out.

After wife and son had fled, all the boxes and LP12 can be replaced under insurance. So, I would be getting out as many of my rare and first pressing records as I could as they are irreplaceable

Thanks for the kind words. Reading them took me back to the days I got started in this Hi-Fi thing and what has happened since. Those days were in the late eighties and saw me in the stores of two really good dealers, one in my hometown, the other where I went to college. After hearing what is possible and who made the great things, I dreamed about owning three things: the original Audio Physic Virgo, the Ekos and an Urushi. Luckily I had all of them and enjoyed all three. The Virgo is still in use at a friends place, the Ekos at another one, but the Koetsu will stay with me. According to the dealer who sold me the Urushi in the nineties, there were noticeable variations between supposedly identical cartridges, with some great Red Signatures among the lot, but only few bad Urushis. He had one of each and I traded the Red Signature for the Urushi after a few days. The Red was too mellow for my taste, the Urushi better focused and majestic in a nice way. It has been rebuilt a few times due to age, use and user stupidity. Jan Allaerts did this well, but the last rebuild by Stylus Expert was really outstanding. My Transfiguration, which I bought after the stupidity mentioned above, is a better Allrounder and has no problems tracking highly modulated passages. But the is a certain magic in the old Koetsu.
