Nova Popping

Posted by: DiscoVolante on 06 August 2018

My Nova has started popping my speakers when switching on.  This didn't ever happen before - has anyone else had an issue?  Volume on start is about 10%.

Switching on or switching from standby?

Posted on: 06 August 2018 by DiscoVolante

Standby - it very rarely gets turned off at the back.

Mine certainly doesn’t- it will pop from the speakers if unplugged when in standby but will not if it’s in deep sleep mode. Certainly no noise on switch on as the relays take care of any switch on thump.

It's under warranty so sounds like a return is in order.

i have a Nova and that has been happening to me too - found a solution Disco? a return seems drastic..

Have you tried making sure the volume is turned way down ? Not sure if this would make any difference, but it might

Posted on: 06 August 2018 by supernova

its rarely above 40 when i switch off.. somnetimes down lower - but odd that it should do it, whatever volume

What sources have you got connected to it ?  If your running the TV audio in spdif use of optical over rca is recommended.

This is just with internet radio. The only other device I have is a Core.

Mine gives a very low level pop when switching on and also about 20 secs after switching off - presume it’s normal

Posted on: 08 August 2018 by DiscoVolante

This is a loud pop - it used to be almost silent.

I would get in touch with your dealer.  A very loud pop doesn't sound right to me.

I've emailed product support to see what they say.

Probably best to get your dealer involved.

Did you resolve this? My replacement Nova has started this too

This seems to be happening to my new Nova mostly, but not always, when it has been running for a good few hours continuously, left in standby say overnight and then switched on the next morning. It has also happened randomly over shorter off/on durations but not as often. You switch on and get the normal low level pop which is fine but then just as the music starts (radio usually) there is a nasty loud pop/thump. Neither my Atom nor my previous Nova did this. Is this some sort of normal characteristic of the PSU? Seems odd and its very disconcerting when it happens. This is now my second Nova and just over a week old. Can anyone advise? I'm copying in @Phil Harris here as he may have a view. Thanks.

I would get in touch with your dealer.  A very loud pop just before music starts doesn't sound right to me.

Thanks Richard, I took your advice and picking up Nova #3 tomorrow! I also informed support of the popping issue on existing unit.

Good stuff Mercky.  Hope third time lucky.

#3 picked up this morning and up and running, sounding lovely just out of the box with Tord Gustaven warming things up. My pet hate display panel gap is perfect on this too so let’s hope it’s lucky No3! Great helpul service from dealer once again.

On the my 4th Nova and got another pop (Not as loud at the one that nearly blew my speakers).

This time I missed the precursor, which is when coming out of standby a loud hiss from the speakers.

Well my 3rd Nova is also popping just like the one before it which is very frustrating to put it mildly, I emailed support and have received no explanation bar an email from Phil advising me to return the second one! Should I just put up with it? Is it something that affects random units? Seems pointless going for a 4th unit at this stage without some sort of explanation or assurances. Very disappointing.

This is somewhat disconcerting. Mine has been fine, but this is worrying. I’m sorry that this is happening, I would be over it by now.

Might sound silly but what about taking it to your dealer and trying it there....see if their power supply still causes it ..and they can see how bad it is and perhaps test the next unit before sending it out to you

Mercky, this is very puzzling.  Out of interest is there anything odd downstream with your speakers or your speaker cable/connections etc.?

What speaker cable are you using?  How long is it each side?
