200DR FOR 200
Posted by: Calum Ferguson on 06 August 2018
Gents,
I am just putting my gear back together after being out of action for the best part of two years:
CD5XS/DAC/202/200/HCDR/NAPSC
Before I re-install I wonder if a 200DR should be dropped in and whether this is a cost-effective upgrade. I would intend to trade the 200 at the same dealer where purchased.
Due to box count/budget this is all I can do but I love my 200 and this upgrade seems to be inevitable.
As a follow-up if order the 200DR what is the quickest turnaround I can expect ? Do NAIM keep a small inventory of 200DR's available for instant shipment ?
Thanks.
The DR spec in a 200 only applies to its preamp power supply, which you are not using as you have a Hicap. So I wouldn’t bother.
A service of the poweramp and hicap might be needed ?
I should add that Naim do say there are some other minor changes to the internal layout, introduced with the 200DR, so there may be some small improvement to the sound from this. To be honest, I can’t imagine this alone would justify the upgrade cost. Maybe put the cash in your piggy bank and save up for a 282! Or possibly a source upgrade.
And no they don't keep a small stock of any of the black boxes for instant shipment! Unless the dealer happens to have stock I reckon you would be looking at a month plus for a UK delivery, especially as it's summer time and some production staff are bound to be at the seaside with their kids! But your dealer can ring them and ask.

.....although your dealer might.
Thanks gents, now I seem to recall having a HCDR negates the benefits of going 200 to 200DR. I don’t think this system is logically upgradable, I did not care for the 282 sound, too warm, when I looked at that, 250 with 202 a mismatch, 250/252 too good for the source etc. etc.
I suggest stick with the 200 you have and buy some more music!

The other possibility is a source upgrade. Putting a PSU on your DAC, or changing it for something different, could be worth investigating.
The 282 is too warm??!!
For me, yes, did a 202/282 comparison at the local dealer years ago but I remember at the time instantly preferring the 202, seemed harder edged which I prefer not to mention the nicer aesthetics of the 202 and the small matter of the 282 price, I know I ‘ll get grenades as the 282 is worshipped by many on here
I ran a 252/200 combination for a while and thoroughly enjoyed it. The 252 raises the 200 to another level. I then moved to a 552/200 combination and it is surprising how much the 200 can do with a great source. The 200 is one of the gems in the product family.
I changed my 200 for a 250dr and it was a nice improvement, but just changed my 202 for a 282 already had hi-cap dr but also added napsc. Was a far greater improvement. I would suggest keeping eyes open for a used 282. Perhaps try listening to this combo again. To me the change is more like an exuberant puppy has been let loose. More forward and bouncy, but no change in warmth
I too found the 282 to be a bit of a let down after all the 'exuberant puppy' type descriptions that I had read although I did find it to be an upgrade over the 202 it wasn't worth the outlay IMO.
As it seems you are happy with your 202/200 I would leave well alone and perhaps try the new ND5XS.

That’s what I call a sound advice! After all, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

Calum,
i wouldn’t say worshipped - indeed many find the 282 too exuberant and prefer the maturity of the 252 - but I would say the 282 really is a step change over the 202 but of course it’s all good.

‘Gents’....... don’t you just love that people still getaway with saying things like this.
A little off topic (apologies)
I have a 202/Napsc/HCDR which I am using with an IXO and two Nap 90's in to Allae's. Any thoughts on a pair of 200's with the IXO?
I prefer the active sound even at this level
Calum,I recently moved from 200 to 282.I now hear more instruments I didn't hear before.

If Andy is short for Andrea sorry love I assumed most on here are blokes
Although I am a bloke, I know there are quite a few women members of the forum and it's all the better for that in my opinion.

I’m not so sure they’d take ‘sorry love’ particularly well. A number of the female members use male Forum names to avoid precisely that sort of behaviour.

Only messing around, no worries, on the plane the other week the BA cabin crew woman addressed all the men as “love”, I said if I address a woman like that back home I could be chased out of town, these things are very much down to where you’re from and upbringing
