200DR FOR 200
Posted by: Calum Ferguson on 06 August 2018
Gents,
I am just putting my gear back together after being out of action for the best part of two years:
CD5XS/DAC/202/200/HCDR/NAPSC
Before I re-install I wonder if a 200DR should be dropped in and whether this is a cost-effective upgrade. I would intend to trade the 200 at the same dealer where purchased.
Due to box count/budget this is all I can do but I love my 200 and this upgrade seems to be inevitable.
As a follow-up if order the 200DR what is the quickest turnaround I can expect ? Do NAIM keep a small inventory of 200DR's available for instant shipment ?
Thanks.

I’m not so sure they’d take ‘sorry love’ particularly well. A number of the female members use male Forum names to avoid precisely that sort of behaviour.
Only messing around, no worries, on the plane the other week the BA cabin crew woman addressed all the men as “love”, I said if I address a woman like that back home I could be chased out of town, these things are very much down to where you’re from and upbringing
not sure that background and upbringing works as an excuse...lol
Maybe not, but I am not seeking to be excused it doesn’t have to work
Man who insists that the 282 is almost never the end game for any Naim user is quite enjoying reading current threads
282 is considerably better than a 202.
I got both so no ownership bias...

Does that differ from the DR spec of a NAP250 then, since the 250 doesn't have the ability to power the preamp?
The 250, 300 and 500 have DR regulation and the 009 transistors from Statement. The 200 is not a regulated amplifier and has DR regulation solely in its preamp power supply.

I never said it wasn’t. Merely maintaining that it’s the runt of the litter. Amusingly 2 ppl on the recent thread who insisted it was their end game have since been back exploring other upgrades.

Yes, as HH says, the 250 and above have DR supplies to the power amp itself, and cannot power a preamp.
In lay terms what does a DR spec actually do and how does it improve SQ over a non DR equivalent PSU, amplifier etc?

I can't agree to that.
If anything it's the 202 which is the one I would avoid...

The 202 is a dead end. 282 allows usage of supercar and nap 300.
It was a bad decision for me to buy a 202 and should have bought 282 right away. Bought one eventually and wish i
The DR spec greatly improves the regulation of the power feed. This ensures that whatever the current draw you will not have a varying power source. No matter how fast the demand for power changes the DR will maintain stability and react faster than the non DR supplies.

The 202/200 is a price point in the range with limitations on what PS upgrades can be used which makes sense. Given the 252 is “only” £ 1500 more than 282 I would stay with 202/200 or go 252/250, much more cost-effective, bit like moving from 1 bed starter home to 3 bed
Not quite only 1500 GBP
The supercap required for 252
But 282 can work with 200 i.e no PSU
Flat cap
Hi cap
2 hicap
Supercap
Out of all my nain purchases I regret most the 202.
At the end of the day it comes down to £/$/€, I think I’ve got the best there is for my money having started with a NAIT 5i/CD5i, no regrets, it’s all you can do
Hi
Which are your speakers ?
ELAC 310 CE, metal cabinets, teutonic design, would buy from this manufacturer again, 4 ohm, chewed up NAIT 5i, NAP 200 quite happy with them, 202 volume never exceeds a quarter to
