Speaker Advice to Partner Supernait 2

Posted by: johnnnyw on 08 August 2018

Hi I'm currently looking for a replacement for my Leema Xeros which I have partnered with  a CD5XS and Supernait 2.

I really like the openness and transparency of the Xero but I'm looking for something with a bit more bottom end and scale which will perform better on orchestral music.

I have a small and not ideal listening room which is through an arch and part of a larger room. The speakers are about 1.5m apart to keep them 0.5m in from the side walls and 0.25m from the rear wall, the listening position is 2.5m from the speakers.

According to Totems website the Arro works close to a rear wall and images well even when close together. Does anyone have any experience of them, or have any suggestion for other speakers that will work well in this situation?

I also have a SN2 and I am looking to buy new speakers. My speakers are also a bit close to the front and side walls. Since yours are close to the front and back walls as well, I suggest either a sealed design, or a front ported one. A bottom ported speaker might work as well.

I have considered the following:

Neat Motive (bottom ported)

ProAc Tablette 10 (sealed)

Sonus Faber Sonetto II (front ported)

Ryan S610 (front ported)

Spendor Classic 3/1 (front ported)

ATC SCM 19 (sealed)

Totem Tribe Tower (sealed)

I have yet to decide!

I am using Totem Arros on the end of a Nait 2 based system. They are only 6 inches out from the back wall and they sound amazing. They are omnidirectional; they completely disappear and have a wonderfully balanced sound. I use a Rega Apollo-R and a Technics SL 1200 Mk2 as sources. I doubt that you would be disappointed with the Arros.

I would suggest you chaps add Kudos X3s (bottom ported) into the list to audition if you can.  I've been running a pair with my SN2 for a little over year, after ditching a pair of Proac D18s and the associated year of ear ache, and have never looked back. My listening position is a similar distance from the speakers to the OP's, but I will say they are further from the rear wall, about 50cm in my case, but I suspect they would not object to being closer, it's just where I first positioned them, with some thought involved admittedly, and they sounded absolutely wonderful, so I didn't concern myself with positioning any further.

The X3s are simply in a different league to anything else I've heard, though I must point out that includes none of the speakers mentioned above.  What they do have is a seemingly rare immense amount of mid-range detail and separation, and an exceptionally well balanced sound, with a bottom end that's deeper than any compact floor-stander I've ever heard, yet knows it's place and doesn't seem to excite the room like the Proacs (also bottom ported) did for example.

I did audition the X3s at my dealer's against other speakers, and both sides of their own price point, but nothing rivaled them.  Could have auditioned more, but after a home demo it didn't really matter, I just wanted to keep them forever.

If you can definitely try ATC SCM19, they should be a good match for your room and listening distance. I compared these to lots of other stand-mount speakers and didn't find a single one that I thought could get close to SCM19 for sound quality. Maybe I just like the ATC sound. In the end I went with their bigger brother, SCM40, but I suspect these might be just a little too much for your room.
