Issue with Uniti Star... anybody experiencing the same?

Posted by: Oscar_F on 10 August 2018

I have been the proud owner of a Star for a few weeks (great piece of gear, by the way) and have found a small recurrent issue. I have experienced in these weeks three short power shut downs, one by utility, two home created. In all three  cases the Star failed to re-start properly after the shut down, the unit seems to be ok, but is not visible any more in my network and the Naim app and does not deliver any music to my speakers (i.e. if I play a CD, the unit shows the CD is playing but no sound). Looks like the unit does not shut down and re-start properly due to the short time the power is off. If I unplug the unit, wait for a minute or so and power it again then it recovers and works perfectly.

Is anybody experiencing the same? Is this normal expected behaviour with the Star (by the way I also own a Muso Qb that does not have the same issue)?. I do not feel comfortable with having to unplug and replug the unit to recover from this idle status, is there any other way i can "reset" the Star?

Thanks

Oscar, it sounds, from what you're describing that a short power off and on somehow hangs the logic in some way.  Apart from that, I don't know what's happening here, but maybe worth a call to Naim support.

In the meantime, I'll let Phil H know...

similar happened with my Nova after a utilty power outage, the power light was flashing but it wouldent switch on, unplugging sorted it out. Seems your problem is more with your supply rather then the star itself

I’ve owned my Star from September 2017 (one of the first batch) and have never experienced what you describe. That’s not to say  it has been glitch free , but successive firmware upgrades have ironed these out.

I have owned one since May 2018 and I have had a few odd things happen in the early days but nothing since. I put those down to user error. Apart from that, my appreciation for the Star continues to grow. The latest firmware sounds very good to my old ears too.

Long press of power button will put the star into low power sleep. This should re-align it if something hasn't booted up properly after an mishandled brownout event and negate the need for power cable yanking.

Thanks everybody, as long as the issue is limited to something quite unusual such as a short power outage it should be fine. First time it happened I was really concerned, as this was the second Star I tried (the first one was dead out of the box, wouldn´t pair with remote,  work with app or respond to keys in the front and had to be replaced by my local dealer).

By the way Naim Tester, pressing the power button will not work. Whenever the unit gets idle it does not respond to the power key in the front or the remote anymore.

If you’re talkng about ‘deep sleep’ mode, you can’t wake it from the app or the remote. If you can’t wake it by pressing the power button on the front panel, that sounds like a fault.
