A good day out
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 11 August 2018
Back in April a few of us visited the Naim factory in Salisbury. The visit came about following an idea last year, and took a while to set up. Naim did us proud and we all had a really enjoyable day. Others who attended may wish to add more, but for now, here is the group photo.

Hi, Mike, just sent you an e-mail. As I was not part of the beta testing team, would it be possible for me to have access to the 'Forum named' version of the photo if you get that far?

No probs, I've replied to your email
Gazza is 8th from the right, just to the left of Don. Next to him, 6th from the right, is our tall and handsome Forum moderator. 5th from the right is James, who really shouldn’t be there at all as he doesn’t own any Naim at the moment, 4th is David and 3rd is Al, who isn’t really called Al at all. 5th from the left is Simon and 6th is Mike. On Trevor’s right is Huge and on his left is Richard - not the two at the back though. Beyond that I can’t remember so I humbly apologise to everyone else for being so dippy. We need someone clever who can put little bubbles with names above people.
Great! so where are you in the photo HH?
enjoy

Good to see folks and hear their comments after a tour. Thanks all for sharing.
Maybe one day ....

Obsydian posted:Hmm HH why did it take you guys so long, event was in April ???? I thinks when you said VIP treatment you all received an ND555, then poor Richard has spent months photo shopping the picture with a goodie bag ????
Almost right about the ND555,some of may have been infected with the ND555 bug and will have to buy one????
Looks like you folk had a great time! I had fun trying to identify the great and good in the photo - Gazza most obvious (how could I forget?), Simon, Then Richard (it's the height...), Don (haven't seen him since the Great Naim Day Out in 2009. It'd be great to have another one of those!), James. That's about it of those who I've met before. Couldn't identify HH, but then I was looking for someone with both eyes on the same side of his head.
HH or Nigel is third in from the left.
Bump ........... Can peeps who have not done so already email me (in my profile) with their position from left or right in the pic & include your forum name.

I've just emailed you Mike, but like others I'm not on the beta thread.
The visit was very enjoyable and I would like to add my thanks to the Naim staff who were very welcoming and spent a lot of time making the visit a success. I would have liked more time in the listening room!

Mike, it may be better for anyone in the photo who wants to put a name to their face to just post on here.
I'm 6th from the right (CH2 in Naim speak). The tall one at the back...
I have you pre-loaded Richard, I already have about half the group from e-mails, but how/wherever I get the names thats OK. I asked for e-mail to avoid naming anyone who would prefer to remain anonymous. Plus its holiday season so expect some late replies.
OK great.
Re the earlier discussion about it being a group of old white men and no youngsters, that might be due to where Naim is in the market. I don't broadcast what this stuff costs but have impressed on our two youths (18/22) that it's not some cheap stuff from Currys. They get it and treat it with care but still deem it weird to spend that much on a stereo. They like music and in good time will hopefully progress from what they enjoy now as playback devices to something more esoteric as they move through life, and I'll guide them as they do.
Like Radio 4 listenership, it's maybe not best to chase the youth market but better to wait for them to come on board in their own good time. There's a steady flow of former youths looking further along the options on the online surveys to get to their age group...
I bought my first LP12 when I was 18, using money from working at B&Q in a gap year between school and university, and my first Naim (a 42/snaps/110) when I was 23, using money from working in the university bar while doing my PhD. So many people then were really into hifi. These days it’s different it seems.

Similar story here...in the days of grants and no fees.

Food for thought regarding the younger generation. I saved up and bought my LP12, Nait and Linn Kans when I was about 22. Interestingly, my niece, who is 32, is into vinyl and is thinking of buying a Rega deck.
I've dropped Mike an email and, in line with Richard's note, I've no problem identifying myself - making up the back line, tucked in behind Huge and Trevor.
Many thanks again to Nigel (HH), Richard and the good folks at Naim for arranging the visit. It was so much more than I had envisaged and I was genuinely rather taken aback at the time and commitment from Trevor, Steve, Jason and Richard taking us all through such a wide range of topics. Quite a work out for Jason switching cables between the various boxes for the two sub-groups! A very rare and unexpected treat.

I do remember getting/sharing my first ‘Hi-Fi sepetates’ when a Uni student. I do remember many people loved music, but only a tiny number were into serious Hi-Fi... I ensured I shared a flat with a fellow enthusiast... but most were quite happy with ghetto blasters or atrocious cheap music centre thingies which were all the rage in the mid to late 80s... perhaps things aren’t so different these days.
There are some of us under 30’s lurking about and enjoying good hi-fi
It’s certainly difficult sell to my mates though.
Most uni students are too busy moonlighting as strippers or chaperones to pay the fees these days, with no time for hifi shenanigans.
Back in my day in the mid nineties at art school it was the thing to have a massive retro 70s system that would play very loud, we got lucky by having eccentric and generous uncles it seems.
After carefully analysing the photo, it’s clearly obvious I am far to young to have been able to attend this event............ as I am not a cotton top and I don’t dye my hair black....

It may be slightly overdue but please note that there is both a full head of hair and no added colourings. Not sure how much longer this will continue to be the case...!

Memory-lane......
Back at uni in the mid 60's we (well, my circle) mainly built our own kit or assembled kits of parts. ISTR (it might still be in our attic !) a tape recorder by a company which I think was called Martins.
But I do recall one friend who had a Rogers Cadet and Tannoy speakers and another with a Quad and probably Wharfdale speakers. All valve amps.
When I got posted to the Trucial States, late 60's/early 70's, all our gear came from VV & Sons in Dubai. Akai, Dual and Sansui. Seemed to make Simon & Garfunkel come alive. And we could listen to Radio Dhahran.
Naim had yet to be invented, so the best was yet to come !
