A good day out
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 11 August 2018
Back in April a few of us visited the Naim factory in Salisbury. The visit came about following an idea last year, and took a while to set up. Naim did us proud and we all had a really enjoyable day. Others who attended may wish to add more, but for now, here is the group photo.
Same, here, although at 52 it has started to grey in places
I am the natural strawberry blonde with the full head of hair BTW.

My mistake, I just assumed it was your picture in your avatar.......
We’ll get there eventually. I did get to chat to everyone there but have the memory of a gnat and feel really bad that I can’t work out exactly who is who. I need to meet people a few times before I can reliably recall who they are. Maybe it’s the bang on the head. Maybe it’s being 57. Maybe I’m naturally rubbish at recalling people’s names.
HH, we had a brief chat and to jog your memory, I am standing next to you on the right in the photo.
Yes, I twigged that that handsome devil was your good self this very morning, and mailed Don to that effect. There are four or five that I recognise but have no idea whatsoever what they Forum name might be. Who is on my right, and who are the two on the extreme right of the photo? Does anyone know? I feel so dopey.
Hi HH, you probably mailed Mike-B rather than me ?
Just to help re-assure you that your memory isn't as bad as you fear, you did correctly identify me as 7th from the right (wearing the tie). Hope this reassurance helps !

So many people then were really into hifi. These days it’s different it seems.
I do remember getting/sharing my first ‘Hi-Fi sepetates’ when a Uni student. I do remember many people loved music, but only a tiny number were into serious Hi-Fi... I ensured I shared a flat with a fellow enthusiast... but most were quite happy with ghetto blasters or atrocious cheap music centre thingies which were all the rage in the mid to late 80s... perhaps things aren’t so different these days.
I remember that when I left home and bought a house that I was very hard up, no phone, TV or anything much I recall (well mortgage rates were about 15% then) but my sister was scandalised when a new Rega turntable appeared. I explained that it was an essential part of life. None of my friends are into good quality hi-fi and would be shocked if they knew what I spent on Naim. Worth every penny of course.

……nothing wrong with your eyesight then Nigel.
Thanks HH. Nice to put some faces to Avtars.
Good to see someone sporting a Lightning aircraft motif on their polo shirt (2nd left).
I didn't realise Frank Skinner was into Naim (5th right).

Yes, Nigel, I do know who I am - for now. I’m on the extreme right and did email Mike-B to let him know. I’m the other Clive B(aldwin).
I’m not sure how this event managed to pass me by without me becoming aware. Such a shame! It would have been great to meet you all and revisit the factory. The last time I went (with a group of Graham’s customers) was when they were just launching the SL2 speaker, so it’s been a while. I don’t think I’d have done much to lower the average age of the picture though...
Glad it was such a success and thanks HH for posting the pic and for the follow ups on who’s who. Always good to put a real face to an avatar!
We need to get this sorted or our other halves might not let us out again......if there is a next time....hope there is , cos it was fun and interesting. Even if I don,t get to go next time others that missed out will have a great day.
Can I see Barry Cryer there as well? A big Smiths fan so I hear.

Goodness me, I’m amazed I managed to make it upstairs to bed!
What a good looking bunch of Naim enthusiasts! Would love one day to join a factory visit! Would also appreciate a version of the photo with name bubbles. In the meantime, and since I am asking, I thought it would only be fair to post a recent self-portrait.
Back in April , I wonder why its taken so long to hit the forum??
Normally HH can't wait to post something!
Regrettably, our family visited Salisbury a few years ago and I overlooked visiting HQ. When back in New Zealand, I mentioned it to my friendly dealer and he said, oh, we could have arranged a visit! So, now we will have to go back ????

I'm still trying to get my head around the many factoids in Steve's stellar presentation - looks like HH managed to get there before me!
Peter
Sorry, I’ve just realized that I’m too young to be in the in-crowd.

The pic was lost in someones smart phone & it took Richard to root it out.
Folks: I have a bunch of names added to the faces, but still have some blanks, I suspect holiday season might be affecting replies. So far I have - Hungryhalibut, NigelB, Simon-in-Suffolk, Dave J, Northpole, Trevor W, TrickyDicky, Gazza, Don Atkinson, Richard Dane, James, Nick Lees & CDB
I know one or two others, but to be PC just in case someone wants to remain anonymous, I need them to let me know.

I, and others I know, deem it extremely weird that anyone would spend £600-700 on a telephone....

Its not a telephone. It is a pocket computer with optical and aural interfaces, and can function very effectively as a calculator, map (worldwide, and with GPS capability), satnav, portable music player, home music controller, dictation machine, notepad, translator (including imaging of printed text), torch, magnifier, sound level meter, internet browser, email and other messaging device and carry-anywhere camera, and more - all with the advantage of being pocket sized. Oh, and it can make telephone calls as well! A lot of that it can do offline, otherwise can use wifi connection when available so not necessarily needing, or not using, mobile data.
I never understood adding a camera to a phone as they did at first, as a dedicated camera would always take better pictures, though I could see the value for unplanned or emergency use. And for me text messages on the old-style phone were such a pain that I almost never used that facility. But it was when my son had an iPhone 4, and we were travelling somewhere with a deadline and somehow had gone astray so he turned on the (free) satnav app he had downloaded and found a quick route, and then used it to find us a nearby restaurant to eat, that I finally thought to myself that I would like one of those - and received his hand-down next birthday when he upgraded. I think Smartphones wonderful devices!

If you're looking for a caption, surely 'House of Naim launches its Spring 2018 collection' covers it ;-)
