dB power amp naming convention what has gone wrong ?
Posted by: JohnL on 13 August 2018
Hi all, after a recent PC disaster (fried motherboard) I had to resort to a laptop (not new but newer than the departed PC) onto which I installed dab poweramp and set the naming convention as previously, namely \\[album artist]\[album]\[frack]-[title]. I ripped a copy of Nick Drake's Bryter Later and the artist folder is where I would expect it, alphabetical order on the QNAP nas. However, when I open the artist folder to access the album, it says 'Nick Drake', not Bryter Later although the tracks are all there. Has anyone got any idea what may be going wrong here ?
many thanks John
You don’t say which server you’re using - I’m guessing it is going to be Asset if you’re using Qnap. Have you asked Asset to do a rescan ?
Try ripping another disc - does the meta data look right in dBpa before you click the rip button ? If it does that should rule out dBpa as the cause.
The place music shows is governed by metadata usually, not filename so the first thing is the rescan. Next use Explorer have a look at the file system - is the album stored under <artist><title> ?
Assuming it’s in the correct place it would suggest the metadata is transposed: use dBpoweramp to look at the metadata on the folder that’s “wrong” - has it transposed artist with title ? (Or have you unintentionally transposed the metadata somehow?) If you’ve got this far it looks like it was a one off error I can’t explain from your description.
The only time I’ve seen this is when I’ve edited the metadata soon after ripping (straight to NAS) and Asset hasn’t rescanned correctly confusing the Naim app(and me). If I’ve made a lot of these edits I often have to do a rescan all or restart Asset followed by rescan all.
Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm actually using Twonky. Could this be the issue ?, cant get my head round why it should be given the only thing different is my re-installing dB ?. I would welcome your thoughts
cheers
John
I don't see that using Twonky should be the issue - if it used to work it should still I do wonder if you've mis-typed the naming convention in dBpoweramp so it's storing it wrongly, but, as I said, the server uses the metadata to display the artist/album info, hence asking what happens when you rip another disk.
I've found, as I said, that Asset can get confused, or confuse the Naim app, if I make changes to the metadata on the NAS after the server has "published" the original data - I'm assuming Twonky can get as upset, hence suggesting a rescan/restart. Also try clearing the image cache on the app, close the app and restart it - if it comes back up "where you were" try backing out a step or two (i.e. go back from "album" to artist then to artists, then go back in).
Can you let us know what the filename of a single track is, what the metadata for that track is (artist, album artist, artist sort, album artist sort, album title) and where it is stored in the file system (eg \\NAS\music\Nick Drake\Bryter Later\<track number> <track> - sorry, I don't know the album so don't know any of the song titles).
It doesn't matter where the rips are stored as it's all about the meta data. That's what Twonky will be presenting, so if it's not right you won't get what you expect.
Inspect the metadata before ripping, and use MP3Tag (or in Windows just r-click -> Properties) to view the tags that have been written to the ripped file. Identify if the fault is at source or how the metadata is consumed.
Re-load (but not necessarily re-rip) the CD in dbPoweramp CD ripper - look at the various artist and album title tags. That should give you a clue as to where it might be on the NAS.
Of course this might lead you to edit the tags, then re-rip so it appears as expected.
Please excuse my ignorance... what is the difference between metadata and tags?
thanks
There is no real difference as they are used interchangeably in a general sense . More accurately metadata are parameter type value pairs relating to the file...
Therefore metadata might relate to name of track, and track artist.
Therefore the metadata tags might be ‘Track Name’, ‘Artist’. The metadata values for those tags might be ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘ABBA’
Please excuse my ignorance... what is the difference between metadata and tags?
thanks

The short answer is nothing!
Not an expert, but tags imply alphanumeriic characters, whereas metadata could be that or an image?
I found this which perhaps answers part of my question: Are you frustrated by missing information in your audio files? This is known as metadata and is stored in a Tag. The Jaikoz Audio Tag Editor is a powerful yet simple to use tool that allows you to organize, edit and correct thousands of these tags with ease. source: jthink.net
