How bonkers

is it to place a hicap next to a power amp on the same shelf?

Currently enjoying my 62/160 but have a spare(serviced)140/hicap sitting in the cupboard. I fancy giving them a run-out but have absolutely nowhere to put the hicap other than by other source components.

The 62 will be miles away from the power amp and hicap. If placing it next to the 140(with a couple of cms gap)will make the sound worse then i simply won't bother,

thanks,

Sister xx

I can’t see why this would be a problem if the shelf is big enough.

Better next to a Nap rather than a Nac I would have thought.

Yes  - that's why the NAC is as far away as the SNAIC will allow.

Hi Sister,

In the good old days of owning a 32.5/hicap/250 in glorious chrome bumper finish (we are talking the mid 1980s here), I first tried placing the 32.5 on top of the right hand side of the 250.  This was a bad idea.

In those days, I was still young and blessed with functioning brain cells, so placed the 32.5 off to one side of the 250 but put the hicap on top of the 250.  The result was not a complete tragedy but nor was it great.

Then I tried the Hicap next to the 250, with the 32.5 some way off to the side.  Lovely.  From this I concluded that some form of transformer coupling or interference happens mainly when one box is placed above or below a Naim transformer.  Once it is off to the side, any interference is much reduced.

So I would be relaxed about putting a hicap next to a NAP250, so long as it is not on top of it.  If the pre-amp is well off to the side, then even better.

Hope this helps, FT

Many thanks FT. Good advice.

The olive 140 and hicap look very sweet side by side(with a 3cm gap)on the bottom shelf. The olive 62 is on the top shelf. Sound is pretty sweet as well. I'm pleasantly surprised.

A lovely combination Sister.  We have a DAC-V1 and NAP140 next to each other, barely 2cm apart, which is nigh on blasphemous yet sounds delicious.  The brother in law has a NAC72 next to a hicap, with a NAP140 sitting a couple of shelves down below the Hicap.  Sounds sweet as a nut.  Enjoy!

Best regards, FT

My 32.5  sits above and to the left of the 250.2DR, isolated by one standard layer of Fraim. Sounds fine.

Remember the the 140 will take sometime to come on song like a week or 2. keep turned on

Great post. Reminds me of how the Forum was.

I always keep my amps permanently switched on. Also aware that they take quite a time to come on song. I've noticed the sound changing  a lot in the first 36 hours. The 140 and hi cap haven't been used for 8 months.
