Stageline as Stepping Stone to Classic Amps

Posted by: Jockymac on 23 August 2018

Hi.

Current system is vinyl only, and consists of:

LP12/Radikal/Ittok/Adikt - soon to be upgraded with Kore.

NAC72/Hicap (CB)/NAP250 (CB)  - all owned from new and serviced approximately 5/6 years ago.

SBL Mk2

I am happy with the musicality of the above system but would like to get more detail from my LPs whilst maintaining the musical enjoyment.  I have heard various demos which include classic series amps so I believe they are capable of providing what I'm looking for.

I am considering my options for upgrading to classic series amps (secondhand to contain cost).  I can't afford to do this all at once so would have to carry it out 1 or 2 boxes at a time.  I assume that the source first rule applies here, so am toying with the idea of trying a 202 to replace the 72, which would require a phono stage to be added, hence the Stageline.

I realise that involving my dealer in this process would be beneficial, as well as providing a reliable source for secondhand equipment, and I fully intend to raise that with him in due course.  However, I am sure that many of you have been through this process yourselves and would appreciate your thoughts on the best approach and the benefits achieved.

There are many options available as an end result but lets assume the aim is Stageline/202/Hicap/250DR.  Does this setup offer a significant improvement over my current setup?  I've not seriously considered streaming so far but a 272 could be a future option.

Am I correct in assuming that I should start with the 72?  If that is the case I would see Step 1 being a Stageline to replace the phono boards in the 72.  Would I require a separate power supply for the Stageline?  Would it be beneficial to do Stageline and 202 together?

Thanks in advance.
