ND555 and Roon

Posted by: m.paul taylor on 23 August 2018

Last piece of the jigsaw arrived on Tues - the ND555. Still finding my way around it but very impressed so far. It says "Roon ready" but I am struggling to see how to set it up/install it. Can anyone help?

You need to instal the Roon Core software on a computer or a NAS. That will find the 555 as a Roon 'Endpoint', then put the Roon app on your phone/iPad to control it all. Roon will also search your network for music libraries, so tell it which ones you want it to have access to. If you use Tidal, it will also access your Tidal account and merge the whole lot into one music library.

Thanks Chrissu , very clear! Wish Roon website was as clear

It's signposted on their site to how Roon works on the main page. With a Learn How Roon Works link. Admittedly you have to scroll down to find it but it's far from hidden away as if you reading the blurb it guides you there. Perhaps us Roonies should suggest for them to put it at the top.

Thanks SPA. I should have looked more closely but I was keen to listen to the ND555. I cancelled the free trial and explained why. Fair play to Roon, they said they would still let me have the free trial. Good customer service

Yep they are pretty amazing. All the major players of the company  are active on the forum and join in a lot. All support team also follow up pretty damn quick. Then again so far I've had Stellar service from Naim to. Hope you give it a priority a go and see what it can bring to your listening experience, I couldn't be without now. Changed my whole experience with my collection and beyond.

Good to hear Roon follow the forum - I am glad they can see that I was impressed by their attitude and service. The modest cost of Roon set against the significant cost of the kit makes Roon a no-brainer. You are right about the speed of reply - they responded within a short time of my comments

... sorrry, what is std streaming? Sounds infectious!

I would imagine he's referring to upnp via naim app.

That's exactly the question .

I have been a Naim user for 20 years but I started using Roon 18 months ago and have become a massive fan .

I have an Ultra Rendu (with LPS-1 power supply) along with a Mutec MC3+ USB to feed Roon into an NDX/nDAC/252/NAP300 System . It works seamlessly but the reality is that when I use the system with the Naim app steaming off a Uniti Serve it sounds that little bit better, its not a significant difference but its big enough to notice. I really wish it didn't but it does. If you sked me to describe the difference I would say things like "richer", "warmer" "more realistic"

I'm hoping that the ND555 and the NDX2 will bridge that gap but not seen ANY feedback as yet.

No feedback?

If its any help I have not noticed any difference on my Atom when comparing Roon to upnp, but then I was not looking for any either.

Hi, Why not run the Sonore UPnP Bridge directly into the NDX? This presents a bit perfect stream from the Roon Core, to the UPnP input of a Naim Network player.

No asynchronous USB output or conversion to S/PDIF into the Digital input.

Plus you can transcode and present a WAV format from PCM files (FLAC, ALAC, AAC, MP3), and then native DSD64 from dsf files. Then as a bonus you get MQA decode in the Roon Core with version 1.5

Have it working perfectly on a UltraRendu with LPS 1, with the double front panel & silver DC Cable, into my NDS. All the benefits of Roon into the Naim without having to change to NDX2 or ND555

[@mention:29865740417128064], how does the sound quality compare between your Roon / Sonore UPnP Bridge on UltraRendu setup vs direct UPnP between your NAS and NDS?

Hi, It is certainty comparable, given the same UPnP input & bitperfect presentation of a data packet stream to the Naim. I would then go further in that the UPnP Bridge running on the UltraRendu with LPS1 is quieter and with better dynamics than Asset UPnP server running a RPi with an optimized OS and LinearPS.

So this & the Roon UI and overall UX makes it the preferable playback method. I go back to the Naim app every so often, but it just shows the limitations in that UI/UX experience. And I did try and give input to the Beta program for 3rd party UPnP servers,, but it didn’t get anywhere with those, as the focus was on features/functionality for Uniti Core.

Then include MQA playback in the Roon Core, as well.

Great, thanks Simon.

I'm just getting started with ROON. I have ROCK running on an I5 NUC with an Akasa fanless case. And for now at least, I'm running USB out from the NUC, to an iFi USB clean-power/reclocking device, to a Bel Canto uLink, to my UQ2 SPDIF input.
