Tidal versus Qobuz
Posted by: m.paul taylor on 24 August 2018
I have bought an ND555. I had Tidal top spec on my NDS and the contract extended it to the 555. I have subscribed to Qobuz sublime so at present have both. I am thinking of ending the Tidal contract unless it serves a purpose not provided for by Qobuz. Can anyone tell me of a good reason to keep Tidal?
Yes, I've had the same problem with Favourites on my Ipad not showing. However, bizarrely they still show on my Iphone and on my Samsung Galaxy. Also, I can still add a favourite on my IPad and whilst it would not be displayed on the Ipad it would be on the other devices??
P.S. Just checked and still not displaying on the Ipad. Has there been an update?
Currently a TIDAL user and just read an article that Qobuz will be launched in the US in the September/October timeframe so I will have to take a look.
In the article on soundandvision.com it listed NAIM as one of the companies that has an a agreement with Qobuz to integrate into their products. ....... I just did a look at the NAIM website and saw that Qobuz will only be with the new streamers. I was hoping for backwards capability with the NDX.
Qobuz favourites are working again here as well... normality has been restored
Regarding the Qobuz integration with Naim, I thought that was by using Google Chromecast, and that functionality is only in the new generation streamers,
But chromcast doesn‘t sound as good as tidal via naim app. So I think that you have also for the new unitis to go with bubble to listen from qobuz. So please integrate qobuz into naim app!
Well I use Bubble and it has the benefit of acting as a proxy.. your streamer potentially can work less hard, and also acts a codec transcoded converting FLAC to WAV...
i kind of think it’s unlikely you will see any other hard integrations into Naim. I was told they are extremely expensive to do and are generally only appropriate for a small part of their global market.
This is one of the reasons I understand why Naim have focussed on Chromecast and Airplay2, as they allow cheaper and more flexible platform integration more suited to a wider global customer base and multitude of services as opposed to the more limited and expensive service integration... and of course there is nothing stopping customers using UPnP proxies like you and I appear to do... but that is not going to be attractive for the majority I suspect.
Sorry for the request for an idiot’s guide but what would I have to do to use Bubble to play music on the unitilite via my laptop and its cost
Lookup BubbleUPnP on Google or other search engine. You need a host to run it on like a computer/laptop, certain NAS, a RPi etc.. you need a control app on your iPad such as LUMIN, but there are several others... then follow guide.
Essentially it converts Tidal and Qobuz web streaming services into local UPnP services that can be then pushed to your streamer over your home network.
it costs nothing for the software itself... clearly you need your Qobuz and/or Tidal service subscriptions.
Thank you Simon. Will do
m.paul taylor posted:Simple answer - if other people have already had experience of both it makes sense to seek their views as well as finding out for myself
Hi, I am currently having both subscriptions. I vastly prefer Qobuz based on music preferences (I too listen mostly to classical chamber music). But I like the fact that Tidal is seamlessly integrated in the Naim app. As HH and SiS have mentioned there is apparently a way to use Qobuz with Naim streamers with a proxy set up which I have not managed yet but I am still enjoying Qobuz on the NDX via the m-connect app.
I think I will just keep one subscription move f forward - which one depends on the streaming solution I will upgrade my current NDX to. Most likely it will be Qobuz surviving in my set up.

Does that give you access to sleeve notes and libretti? And does it let you create and browse favourites and playlists?

Simon; Does BubbleUPnP allow 24/192 streaming of Qobuz Sublime subscriptions where ChromeCast doesn’t, even for Naim’s new Streamers?
Should we then just connect a Rasberry Pi 3B+ kit (latest generation) including 32GB disk space, case and power supply to our router as you have suggested in another thread? A short Cat 6 should be sufficient where we still have an Opal to the NDS.

DRPO - It too have used m-connect for qobuz via CCA. Unfortunately it does not seem to give access to the booklets which using qobuz direct does. Also, does using m-connect with NDX give you gap less playback for qobuz, which CCA unfortunately does not?

No it unfortunately doesn’t and lack of access to the booklets is a major drawback, but I don’t know of any way of managing this apart from either “casting” (eg. chrome cast with new ND streamers which from what I hear has inferior SQ) or a fully integrated Qobuz app (I have seen this with Burmester and was really nice); however few manufacturers decide to go this way, most -like NAIM- prefer to use chrome cast...
I have listened to many a whole album without gaps but should check this more carefully.
Qobuz booklets available in both Audirvana and IPeng running from LMS
Hi R.K. I am able to run Qobuz from iPeng as well but (at least with the iOs app) i cannot access the booklets... what am I missing?
When playing a track pull it to the left in iPeng. Scroll down to “Qobuz goodies”. If there's a booklet available it will be listed there.
Thanks, tried but not working with my SOtM SMS 200 renderer, will check if an upgrade to latest FW will resolve it and (if not) contact SOtM on whether this will be implemented in the future.
@R.K: Update: works indeed after activating some additional plugins and FW update but (so far) only with Logitrch Media server (IP address:9000), not with iPeng. Thanks anyway!
Ah.. you need to go slide to open the “more” options, brilliant, thx!

I believe it does support hidef streaming.. but can’t confirm as my lowly rural broadband can only manage standard FLAC. Yes RPi connected to switch is fine... I use a second generation RPi and it’s fine and it transcodes as well

That will depend on control app... I sometimes use the Naim app to pull back info from Rovi.

Is there control point app for your set up that will also retrieve Qobuz sleeve notes, as distinct from the Album/Artist info?

Hmmm, I didn't manage to get to booklets on the iPad app either -- pulling to the left gets me to "More" and "Song Info", but not to any "Goodies" like booklets... Oh well...
A different iPeng and Qobuz issue, if I may: My "Favourites" are ordered by Date, rather than Album Title -- the latter I would much prefer, since most of my "bookmarked" albums start with a composer's name. But I cannot find any setting that allows me to change the display order of albums. Is this another indication of my rather modest IT competence, or isn't it possible to change the order of Qobuz albums in iPeng?
Cheers,
Timo

Just tried on my iPeng .. I get the booklet for that album fine. Swipe left on something in the playlist, click More, click Qobuz goodies (near the bottom), up comes Qobuz goodies with the word booklet which turns into the booklet when you click it. Bit clunky, but it works. Good old iPeng.
But I don’t think iPeng lets you change the display order of your favourites though.
