NACA5 - design changes old vs new
Posted by: JanÅ on 25 August 2018
NACA5 is about 30 years or so?
When did Naim change the text and finish on the plastic?
How can you identify recent cables from the old?
I have seen some have text on the plastic separating the wires, some have text on the wire
Mine is about 20 years old (BLACK) and has the directional arrow and Naim logo on the wire.
I'm not sure of when the marking was changed, probably within the last decade, but difficult to be sure without checking with the factory. However, I would guess the reason it was done was because with the logo and direction printed on the edge of the cable it was easy for it to rub off with age/use, whereas when printed on the webbing between the conductors, the chance of such wear is minimised.
For all that, AFAIK, the cable itself has remained unchanged.
Did they not release a slightly more flexible version at some point or have I got that wrong?
The previous cable, NACA4, was a bit more flexible.
Thanks for the insight guys!
I looped round some insulation tape at one end on my twenty year old NACA5 when first bought it so I would always know it's directionality if the markings wore off, good job I did too.
I had NACA4/K20 at one time and moved to NACA5 over 20 years ago. One run of it has almost no markings on any more, which seems to be a standard issue.
My runs are both 4M, but I now need 2M per side with my current room layout. Clearly, don’t plan on cutting the lengths, so how do people cope with the excess? I have found that it does curl into untidy loops of about 18 inch diameter (but under some protest) which have to use masking tape to prevent them unravelling again! It really is the most wilful cable.
I for one am keen to see pics of people's naca5 routing to the speakers
Mine are 2.5 mtr on each side and any more is unmanageable for me.

Z-fold the excess cable; use a hair dryer to make it more flexible and then add a couple of strips of tape or cable ties.

If you are using a older Naim amp then 2.5m is too short. Check your manual.
Mine is an SN2
Going beyond 2.5 meter a side is not possible for me due to aesthetic reasons
But I want to see how people fit 3.5 mtr or more a side
That's why the request for pictures of the naca5 in your system

I read "Z-fold" and I heard "concertina" - what is that? Are the any pics och videos on how to proper fold NACA 5?
Thanks!
See Lewis's pic in this thread ☺
Got it, interesting method
