555 service

Posted by: fathings cat on 27 August 2018

Hi all, my 555ps is of 2006 vintage and from memory the service period is 10-15 years making mine right in this window.

What  signs would I hear to signal a service is required now as opposed to say 12 months time?

Compared to my LP12 it sounds a bit harsh and “trebbely” - will probably have a chat with my helpful local dealer but any views on here?

thanks

Gary

I would suggest you have possibly answered your own question, if the expected sound diminishes  on a permanent basis, then it’s ready for a service.

Their are a number of threads on this subject if you do a search...

Take it to a dealer and compare with a fresh one.  That's really the only way to tell if it's "off".

I' ve been told by our local service manager at LASA that servicing for 500 series can be postponed a few years beyond the 10th year mark. Unfortunately the old adage " if it ain' t broke.. "  Does not apply very much for myself. In fact i' m  usually inclined to anticipate servicing on cars and hi fi either.

Perfect opportunity for service + DR upgrade! Cost esffective combo I suspect. My 555PS and Supercap are in the same position - need to get them off to Naim asap.

It's such a shame that Class A can't do the DR upgrades.

Do any dealers have  CD555 demo units  to compare  it against?

I heard that for a power supply or power amp it's 10 for a preamp it's 15. First two have, to use technical terminology, loads of power running about in them.

Not sure about signs but I picked up my recently purchased 10+ year old s/h 555 PS from the distributor today who DR'd and re-capped the aging PS. First impressions of a fresh DR’d + recapped 555 PS, vocals seems more prominent, more bottom and somewhat more focused soundstage. Listening at moderate levels, nothing to loud. I look forward to eventual improvements.
