Hi there!

Finally bought a NAS (Synology DS 118) with an 8 TB HDD.

All is fine except that thing won´t go into "hibernate/standby"....any help would be awesome.

I did all this:

I don't know a terrific amount about the device but why do you want it to hibernate?

I thought to give the HDD some time to "rest"...

Not necessary???

WD 'Red' HDDs do their own automatic power management - it's best to let them run their own sleep schedule, this puts the least stress on the drive.  I believe the same hods true for other NAS specific HDD types.

Hibernate would be beneficial if using a desktop drive, but, in the longer therm, they aren't really suitable for NAS use as they're inherently unreliable when subject to common NAS working conditions.

I have an older DS115, and although I don't bother with standby, I did change the fan settings, as what I initially thought might be the sound of the hard drive spinning permanently turned out to be the cooling fan. By default, it was set to run all the time, which for a NAS in a cool location with a light workload, seemed like pointless noise pollution. I set it to the lowest setting, where the fan only comes on when it detects a temperature rise.

To get it to hibernate you have to be aware that a lot of normal background running items will keep it awake, so much so its hardly worth trying IMO..  If you are running only one of the media server's (UPnP),  File Station, HyperBackup & Search,  it can be done by disabling the stuff that keeps it awake,  even then it will start up a few times a day without any direct activity other than picking up a ping from the computer its associated with.

The Ace Peripherals link you posted has it all more or less covered,  although I have not compared it line for line with my list.

Not much help to you but Qnap do have an hibernation mode in their control panel web page. I use this feature when away from home as it can be woken up remotely by phone app. As to Synology, have a look at this < https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-...on-once-again/110134 > and have a look at Synology reply that someone pasted in as well as some of the other replies.
