NDX2

Posted by: gramophone on 31 August 2018

Ive ordered an NDX2 and eagerly waiting for it to arrive.

I bought a Uniti Star earlier this year. Yes, wasted money I know, but not too much. I'm selling it on to someone who will cherish it cos it's a great product, sale agreed but til his flat sale goes through I've still got it. Old Arcam Solo will have to bridge any gap.

I ordered the Star last October at which point the dealer had had it on demo for a while. I received delivery at the beginning of February this year. I understand that Naim have only recently released demo NDX2s to dealers. Crikey! does that mean I'm gonna be waiting til nearly Christmas? Anyone know about the history of Naim's new product release time frames?

Well, I never knew that.

it's about how powerful biases can be on our minds.  Informative, short easy read.

Friend told me that in any audition to compare hifi the mind will fall back on the first as a reference point and the first is difficult to dislodge. This wasn't the case in your NDX2 v's ND555 test. But perhaps the "told it's much better and more expensive" influence is paramount. This is the subject of the article above. Wine experts (who really can make meaningful distinctions when not led astray) fall for a trick like suckers when misled by this bias (i.e. falsely told "this one's much more expensive) - fall for the deceit to a man (/woman).

This is so relevant and prevalent in all walks of life, that is unconscious bias. It’s apparently how our brains work... part of the implicit herd instinct of group message reinforcement and expectation and basic snap judgements we do based on our natural survival instincts. I have been looking at this in my pressional world.. to counter it you need to be aware of it and compensate by making decisions on clear objective parameters. Where there is subjectivity and ‘feel’ almost certainly subconscious bias will be at play.. I paid a lot for something, or I value this brand, therefore I expect and want this to be good or a positive experience for me, therefore the chances are it will be unless something is quite wrong.  It’s one reason why branding is so important...

in life this applies to far more than just consumer brands and cars and Hi-Fi, but  also to race, colour, creed, age , sex, accent, appearance, education  etc.......

I guess it's also why placebos are used in clinical trials.

Apologies, not sure how to access members profiles yet!

Thanks for the advice...i’m probably going to wait until the new 272 is launched and go from there for my next step...so no rush.

As I said I’m loving the Nova...I find it’s sound very ‘addictive’ which is, I guess, why we want more.????

Out of interest if I do go 272 & 250 combo would the X2’s still be suitable or should I be thinking something like PMC 25/23’s as any floorstander’s need to be no more than 170mm wide.

Whatever is decided it will be following a proper audition.

I have stuck with my X2s with a Superuniti and my current NDX/282/200. I've also listened to them driven by a 250 and a 300, and they are perfectly capable of showing up the differences in the various amps and sources I've had in front of them. Of course there are 'better' speakers out there, but it's as much to do with the way they work in your room as it is how they work with your system. In your situation, my approach would be to decide on the electronics first, get everything set up nicely, and only after that, start shortlisting new speakers to listen to.

Also find when listening to a potential upgrade, you tend to actively listen and hear things that appear new. You then go back to the original set up and realize they were there all along.

I've often used a simple analogy (although not entirely accurate) to try and help explain this. If you view, for example, a painting from afar the detail is not apparent until you move much closer. For example being able to read the lettering on a boat in a harbour. Move away again and you know the name of the boat without actually being able to read it. Your enjoyment of the painting has now been enhanced by "@knowing" this extra detail.

So...in the example of a potential hi-fi upgrade greater detail becomes apparent in the auditioned piece of kit, which your brain then tells you, and your hearing perceives it to (rightly or wrongly) be heard in the "inferior" piece of equipment.

Hope I'm making some sense!

Wasn’t quite sure which thread to add this to, or whether to start a new one, but I think there’s been enough different threads already about NDX2, so thought I would add it here!

went to Music Matters in Birmingham today as they were having an NDX2 showcase day. They had it set up with an 555PS and 282/250, through B&W 802’s I think. It was a proper heavyweight system, and it sounded like it. The iPad was generously shared and I also managed to get an AC/DC track in off my USB stick too, must say it all sounded proper airy/floaty yet punchy, really lovely sound. Difficult to ascertain what was elevating the sound to this new level as the different parts were all new to me.

The guys were saying it had only come out of Salisbury yesterday, along with the ND5XS2 which was playing in another demo room, so it was all absolutely not run in, very interesting I have to say. Would be good to hear it all in a couple of weeks time...

The ND5XS2 was playing through a SN2 and Dynaudio standmounts, sounded excellent, lovely room. This really sounded like it was punching way above its weight.

All in all, a really enjoyable couple of hours, very informative staff and some lovely kit on demo/on show. For me, I need to hear the NDX2 in an A/B comparison in my own system vs. my own NDX to evaluate the differences. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a considerable step up but I don’t need to take a blind punt because what I already have is excellent. When demo units are available I’ll give one a listen.

Something to look forward to for sure!

Thanks for the update, ND5XS2 should be a great streamer.

I really was impressed with the ND5XS2 Gazza, I think that will be the surprise package at its level out of the new releases.

I heard briefly today the NDX2 at my dealer, very impressive indeed. I'm waiting for the ND5 XS 2 myself and my dealer tells me, not long now!!

I have a question regarding NDX2 and Roon. If a usb harddisk is attached directly on one of the NDX2’s usb sockets, will show up in Roon? Does all the music on it get mapped automatically as part of Roonready functionality?

you have tell roon where the music is...f.ex. //NAS/music/.... etc. So I don't think that you can point through a NDX2 to an USB stick connected to it. It could be possible (!) if NDX2 would act as a server/storage me thinks...

No it will not. If the disk is accessible by samba from the unit  then it can be added to Roon as a storage location on the Roon core.

So I guess this means any music directly attached to the ndx2 can only be selected using the front panel of the ndx2 or the Naim app(in my case on iPad). Does Roon Ready just mean the device (the ndx2) can be selected as an audio zone for playback and nothing else?

I wondered if the sound quality would be improved much by directly attaching the music disk to ndx2 vs disk on Mac -> Roon -> Ethernet into ndx2. I listen to a mix of cd rips (lossless Flac), hd music, and tidal.

Maybe one of the new ndx2 owners in this forum is also a Roon user and could try it for me?

I do not have a NDX2 and I cannot answer your last question. My understanding is that the NDX2 can act

1) as Roon endpoint

2) as a UPnP server,

3) as a UPnP client + DAC and

4) as S/PDIF DAC.

Roon ready certainly means what you say not only for Naim devices but generally: a device is said to be Roon ready if it can act as a Roon endpoint.

I very much doubt that the sound quality could be improved if your Roon server would pull files from a drive attached to the NDX2, assuming that this is possible.

I do not fully understand what you are trying to do but if I had a Roon server and wanted to serve files that are stored on a USB drive to Roon endpoints (like the NDX2) I would simply connect that drive to the Roon server. Perhaps I am not understanding what you are trying to do.

Posted on: 17 September 2018 by ChrisSU

A USB drive attached to an Atom is not visible to Roon, so you can be pretty sure an NDX2 will be the same. If the computer you run the Roon core on has a spare port, you may as well use that.

Thanks for all your replies everyone.

[@mention:23389351206659471] Hi. My current set up is what you describe: a Roon server (Mac) with the music data drive directly attached. I don’t have an NDX2 yet either, I currently I go from my “frowned upon” Mac USB > Jitterbug into my Hugo2 then on to SN2.

After replacing hugo2 with an NDX2 I would use ethernet, Roon control via my netgear switch. That way I’d avoid the usb and it’s associated computer RF noise. My question was just me trying to guess how Roon might work and if it would know if music was directly attached on an NDX2. I was wondering if I’d  be able to minimize the signal path and do everything internally to the NDX2 to avoid other noise that might possibly be created by my network switch; I don’t have a feel for how significant that might be. Thanks to everyone’s helpful replies I now know that won’t be possible with Roon.

Naim app only as far as I could tell, just like the recent Unitis I don't think there's a way to select audio on USB via the front panel.

Other UPnP servers on your network can see it too, but that doesn’t help here, as Roon is not UPnP.

Roon does not work as this if you have a NAS, you can connect the external harddrive to it, and then add the external harddrive to Roon? Maybe Naim Uniti Core can be used with Roon?

Looking forward to use Roon with ny NDX2 i hopefully have soon

If you have a reasonably powerful NAS, you can run Roon on that and it will find your music stores on the NAS, and on other devices on your network, and play them on the NDX2. It’s just the USB input on the NDX2 that is not visible on your network.

Or you can use a separate computer to run Roon in the same way if your NAS cannot do it.
