Hurray for the New Naim App
Posted by: Chris_T on 06 September 2018
I've been having a problem getting my Uniti Star discovering my NAS Wired via a Powerline setup. I've had to use Wireless which was occasionally a bit iffy. The new App is finding the wired NAS now. A big THANK YOU to the people at NAIM for this improvement.
Use the UPnP input and select the music via the Artist or Album list rather than via folders.
What is the source of your music? If you play via an UPnP server this server should be responsible for the track order. In this case the question ist: Are the tracks correctly tagged with the right track number?
Edit:
"Use the UPnP input and select the music via the Artist or Album list rather than via folders"
Ah yes, if you are using the folder view the tracks are sorted alphabetically. This is the reason why I am using a numbering for all tracks like:
'01 - Let'\''s Go Crazy (2015 Paisley Park Remaster).flac'
'02 - Take Me With U (2015 Paisley Park Remaster).flac'
'03 - The Beautiful Ones (2015 Paisley Park Remaster).flac'
...
Source: Netgear 4 bay NAS running Raid 5, files ripped to FLAC from CD using dbPoweramp. Track numbers and other Metadata checked using Windows 10 Explorer: sorting by track number embedded data works correctly with windows.
Using the new Naim app (Android) listing by Artist, Genre, Album, Artist, Folder all produce the same alphabetical order: A descending to Z with incorrect track numbers added sequentially at the side 01, 02, etc. Some of my older files are mp3 filed "01 track name" as you suggest and these obviously list correctly as alphabetical listing produces the desired result. I've no intention of renaming 5000+ tracks!
Any further ideas?
The hurray has passed for me as the volume on Android keeps disappearing as another poster above has mentioned. I pop into settings and retick and as if by magic it's reappears, a while later it goes missing again.
Oh and another thing the all artist search grid goes from 4 wide to 3 then all hell breaks loose, you select an artist and it's the wrong one. Fine on previous version.
It's okay in single scroll.

Then you need to look at the Media Server software you are using, as it's that which controls the displayed track order, not the Naim app.

+/- typically has been used for analog volume controls via system automation, whereas the slider is used for digital volume control (on the Uniti series).
Not yet upgraded the app and connection has become more flakey - odd used to be virtually flawless on the Nova.
Oddly trying an NDX 2 I saw +/- below the volume slider (which did nothing as set to fixed output) but have never seen this for the Nova

If volume control is on an separate preamp, the slider cannot be used, so the +/- controls appear instead. As Bart mentioned, the streamer accesses the analogue preamp's volume control via 'system automation' using a cable. This remains the case with the new streamers,

I have tested this on my NAS with minimserver and the Android naim app. I have created a testfolder, put some tracks into it and renamed the tracks by removing the track number from the file names. Also I have renamed the album name to a test album name in the meta tags.
The result was: In Artist->Album-View and even in the folder view(!) the order was displayed correctly. So the meta tag track numbers are responsible for the ordering.
This is probably down to me not understanding properly how these things work. I have Plex installed on my NAS which I use with my Samsung Smart TV. I also use it with my outdoor system streaming through a chromecast audio via an android devices. In both cases ttack mumbes are correct.
When I use the Naim app I see two media player choices: Plex and my Netgear NAS network name. I have been opting for Netgear NAS because I wanted the cleanest path (not being shure that Plex didn't compress the flac files) Should I use Plex? If I usec Plex with the Naim app the track numbers are corectly applied from the embedded data.
Please can someone explain how this all works.
I, too, have updated the Android app on my phone (Moto G5) and like Hifiman have the album icons changing from three wide to 4 when scrolling up and down the screen. But my main issue with the new update is that if I'm on a page showing a list of album tracks, I cannot backspace to Album view, as the screen changes to the Home page. I would say it's doing this for about 80% of the time regardless of whether the source is the NAS or the Unitiserve. I've uninstalled and re-installed the app but the problem remains. So, regrettably, I'm back to using a third party app to control my NDX and NAS.
