Recap older preamp

Posted by: Stover on 07 September 2018

I wonder if recap of a 282 from 2006 is a good idea (good s/h price)   Will it be as good as new? It is said the volumpot has started to fail, but dealer says Naim will fix that also during recap, if they are informed. Recap cost about BP 400,-

I’m a bit pedantic and it should be looked at as «new» after recap

I had both my 102 and 82 serviced by Darran at Class A,  he's a Naim Authorised service agent and generally cheaper than the factory.  Google him and give him a bell.

Yes as new and upgraded to current spec if required by naim or class a.

Being nosey, I’m intrigued why you might want a 282 when you have a 272/555. Is the lure of the ND555 irresistible?

Thanks, so good as new after recap sounds great. The easiest way to recap for me is by using the dealer or importer and I find the cost as acceptable.

HH- Good question, 272/555/250 suits me fine and sound great. As far as I can see (through the fog) I want the new streamer standard and am considering NDX2. Problem is I will need a preamp, another psu and so on and honestly we both know where it ends. Best for me is to wait for a possible 272.2 or its like. My 272 has been at the factory for repair and in the meantime Atom has done the job in the main system. All I can say is, its great for music and I have even considered if Nova is enough for my needs.

So far I'm doing research....

It’s only worth having the new streamer standard if you want the new functionality. While an NDX2 and a 282 will very likely sound better, do you really want those extra boxes and wires. I thought about an ND555 and a 552 but decided against it. The 272 is really quite good enough, though in the meantime I’m saving up in case the new platform 272 is a real step upwards. I also thought about an NDS and a 282, but after a few days doing nothing the thoughts went away again. As you say, we’ve both been up and down the ladder, and at some point it has to stop. That said, the 300 is really very good, especially with the 272/555!!

HH- First, To be honest, I have already ditched preamp route due to reasons you mention, still, the low s/h price for 282 and even a SC made me ask about recap.

I agree with you in every aspect. More boxes and wires, no thanks, but in my world it has to be considered when the nagging or questions are not taken care of   In fact, I’m after simplicity, that’s why Nova is an option. I may audition it and have also ordered a rca to xlr cable to use between Atom/ Nova to 250 to get flexibility.

I even sold my Bauer dps recordplayer for simplicity, I can easily live with the easy to use Reloop.

New streaming platform most for better performance, but also for easier access via phone etc.

Last, thank you for reminding me about the dangerous ladder.

I had recaps on both Nac 82 and Nac 52 and was very happy with the results. Usually can go longer than 10 years for service however.

Recap of 32.5 was definitely worthwhile, likewise HiCaps. Rule of thumb: get it checked out roughly every 10 years. Darran can advise.

Thanks again- seems like a good idea then, now I know. I have (as mentioned) decided not to take the preamp route this time.

Against my earlier conclusion I have purchased a s/h 282 (from 2006). Recap next. I wonder what HH wil say to this????

Next, if I take this further, I will need a new source. Exciting times.

I just had my 2005 250-2 and 2008 HiCap serviced and DR'd. At the same time I sent along my 2008 282/NAPSC along for recap service as well. Everything is back with DR upgrades and recap service all done, and good as new. Now I'm breaking it all in again. I also had my Herron VTPH-2 phonostage upgradded to 2a spec. I may not know what upgrades contributed to what improvements but who cares. It all sounds great and is getting better the more I play music.

If it makes you happy, then that’s great.

282 is a much better preamp than a 272.

Doug Graham told me himself.  Plus I’ve herd it for myself.

So yes, if you can handle the boxes your onto a winner.

Congratulations on the correct decision for you????

Thanks- Earlier system up- and downgrades have been about trying to get it to sound right, without listening fatigue etc and when saying that, I mean for several years.

Since then I have turned speakers placement from the long wall to the short wall and that made a huge difference. Further I have done some acoustic treatment (not very much and mostly furnituring) and my system as it is right now sound amazingly good. I even think there is more to get from the room. I think most of the speakers and Naim systems I have owned, with the new use of the room would have performed successfully. So this time I'm after more of what I already have. I may fail, but I don't think so.

NDX2 is the obvious choice to me with the 282. I even have a non dr SC as a possible purchase, but that's not settled yet.

Just for info, I had my 252 serviced recently. It had a noisy volume pot which naim replaced as part of the service. Excellent service I thought.

I bought a spotless 2008 282 last year - At 9 yrs old it didn’t strictly need a service but sent it straight to class A as the logo needed replacing and got the recap done anyway. Now looks and sounds like a brand new one so a very happy customer here..
