NDS prices

great to see the SH price of the great NDS seems to be £4995 now the 555 and NX2 are reaching dealers.

add a used 555ps at about £4500 and you have a great source for £9500 or 2 ps 555 you have a amazing source for £14000.

Indeed I have expected NDS to have a very good second hand price now that it is discontinued!

Doesn't the SH price of an NDS vary considerably depending on its age?

Indeed. NDS prices will also vary due to their availability on the secondhand market and the cost of alternatives and upgrades. Of course the cost of the most-considered upgrade, the ND555, is considerably higher. Some would also argue that the NDS is Naim's second best streamer, behind the ND555.

The thing against NDS values is that it is in the fast-developing digital domain, where depreciation is higher than products in the analogue domain. Speakers are of course a different story.

I’ll get an ND555 one day second hand as I did with my NDS. It’s good that quite a few seem to be selling right now. Look after them guys as yours might be my second hand bargain in a couple of years time

You might need to wait for the unique opportunity of finding a demo unit, which is getting replaced. I am not expecting that it will be easy to get to in the com8ng years.

I don’t know where you got that figure from. If anyone were to offer me a figure in that ball park for my NDS I’d bite their arm off!!

I would say £4,000 including the burndies for an older one

I think that too is highly ambitious. Roger said he sold his through a certain auction site for £3,500, which was probably reasonable for a private sale.

I think the price will depend upon how nds/555 compares to ndx2/555. If the nds is better then it is still naims second best streamer and therefore may well continue to be sought after. However if the ndx2 is better then nds prices may fall quite heavily. Either way mine still sounds great.

I recently sold my NDS for somewhere in this region. I believe that both parties achieved a fair price and that we should be very pleased with the deal.

If anything I believe that in a few months i may be the one who wishes that i had held out for while longer and that, when prices stabilise, the purchaser will be happier still with their position

its an awesome bit of kit and a newer version doesn't automatically break or degrade the quality of what an NDS is capable of....

I’ve just bought an almost brand-new, barely used 2018 for £5k from a dealer. There’s definitely a few about at various price points. I’m looking forward to getting back from a week at a conference to listen to mine (and to get my new to me speakers set up).

I think you'll find prices getting closer to £3,000 for older models inprivate sales and on eBay obviously if you trade in witha dealer you wil get a better price.

Really? Not from my dealer.

That's a shame I've always got better prices trading in with a dealer. I don't know if Tom Tom Audio stock new units like the ND555 but they were more than fare with me when I traded my 202 for a 282.

Generally a dealer can't afford to give a trade in price which is as high as a private sale may be because they have to factor in the cost of providing a guarantee on units they sell on and also they have to charge 20% VAT on the sale price, not to mention no doubt hoping for a contribution to the costs of running the business.

Some dealers make the trade of used units a larger part of their business model and no doubt there is sometimes a certain investment in customers they think will be coming back frequently long term.

Also the price of trade ins can helpfully disguise a strategic decision to sell a new unit to a customer at an effective price that Naim would not like.

My local Naim dealer doesn't like part-exchange and the one time I persuaded him, it was for a very unexciting trade in price, even though I had bought the unit new from him only 18 months earlier  (but I didn't have the fag of selling the unit on myself, so I swallowed hard and agreed).

Anyway all of this means, so far as I can see, that a private sale will usually realise more cash that a trade-in with a dealer, although in the latter case the numbers may be quite obfuscated by the rest of the deal.

best

David

I was offered a six year old NDS, with both burndies, for £3,200 by a Naim dealer, and with the 12 month warranty.

David

I think much depends on your dealer and their chosen ‘business model’. Mine is constantly innovative in terms of offers particularly where a new model is involved and the trade in values I have received have always been more than acceptable. They appear not to be shy of involving Naim in what they want to do either.

They have certainly done more business with me and by association so have Naim by adopting this approach.

Streamers are a bit like old computers, virtually near worthless after a period.

Who would honestly look out for ND5x or NDX these days ?

If anyone, market will flow with these items and dictate prices

Posted on: 10 September 2018 by Bob the Builder

I think there will still be buyers for older Naim streamers you only have to look on eBay to see that.  They may be outdated to most of us here on this forum but out in the real world £1000 -1,500 which is what a used ND5XS will cost is a lot of money and the ND5XS is worth that if you ask me just because there have been lots of progress in streamer design since these old units products were born doesn't mean they are not still fine sounding machines and IMO they still are.

It’s a good deal but I don’t want to have to buy a dedicated preamp. So no thanks. I’ll wait to see what the new 272 is like.

Will the NDS one day come to be revered as the CDS3 is now?

Well, I've just bought an ND5X....maybe I should have told the owner it was near worthless and offered a pony for it?

I guess it really depends on you what you are after. The old NDs offer extremely good value for money in the current market, and as to whether SQ advances justify the price of the new streamers depends on each individual's ears and depth of pockets. With regards to the new streaming board, the new streamers might offer more stable wifi -- but this might not matter for those who hard-wire their streamers... And personally, I feel there is a great question mark over using Chromecast for streaming. The "use value" of Chromecast without gapless play is ZERO in my opinion... Admittedly, Roon is a big plus with the new streamers, but this you can fix easily with the old streamers too... I used an inexpensive Allo DigiOne to try Roon with my ND5XS, for instance.

That can only be because you have not yet heard your NDS against an ND555,  Mr H.   Would I be right by any chance ?
