Uniti Atom HDMI Upgrade - Why?
Posted by: Jack911 on 09 September 2018
Can someone explain the benefits of the HDMI upgrade for the Atom?
Just so you can connect a tv with arc out ..
From my knowledge, optical output from previous generation (UQ 2) its good enough for audio. HDMI its a complex protocol designed to work with image also. The optical one are not.
OK, so I still don’t see why I’d need HDMI for what is essentially an audio-only device.
There are other ways, I assume, to connect the TV so that its audio goes through the Atom and, I also assume, the Atom doesn’t care about video signals.
the hdmi link removes any lip sync issues that my be present and allows the tv remote to control the atom - bit of a gimmick but i use it on my nova when watching a film
HDMI ARC is for routing the sound from the TV to an external device, not the video. Most TVs now have an HDMI ARC port as well as just a regular HDMI port, so check that yours has this. The audio signal should then automatically be routed to the Atom, and the volume can be adjusted through either the TV remote or the Atom. The Naim app also has a lip sync adjustment for the HDMI input. Unfortunately, I found the lip sync timing with a Samsung TV into an Atom to be wildly erratic. Sometimes it works, but not often. Usually it is a long way outside the range of adjustment available, and if I'd known how badly this would work, I wouldn't have wasted £150 on it. My advice would be to use an optical connection instead.
Is there any lip sync issue when using optical?
I use optical from my virgin media box to Nova....the dealer adjusted lip sync when installing the Nova.

Blimey - a dealer doing his job! If this catches on, 90% of the Streaming forum will be redundant
I was an old Naimee coming back to Hifi.....nothing special for me, just good service.
Hdmi input allows cec , essentially meaning the atom can switch off and on with the tv, and the tv remote volume button will control the atom volume. So you only need one remote for tv watching

As i imagine. Allow some integration with the tv but does not add real value to justify the cost. thanks for the explanation dear ChrisSU

I don’t think Macs have an HDMI ARC output. Can you use an optical connection?
How can I do that??? Thanks so much!
The 3.5mm headphone socket on a MacBook often has an optical output included. You would need an optical cable with a mini connector at one end, and a standard connector at the other (Atom) end. These are not expensive.
As for any external audio device, you need to go to the Mac’s System Preferences > Sound > Output and select the correct output, which should appear in the list.
I’m not convinced that Tidal Masters is worth using, but it would be easy to try. Remember that the full MQA ‘unpacking’ process requires the use of an MQA enabled DAC, and the Naim DACs do not do this.
The new MacBook and other newest MacBooks don’t have optical output
thats why I have the problem
thanks

This function do not work. I have Sony Bravia TV, and yes, Uniti switches off with the TV, but after 15 minutes it turns on again. So I have to change Uniti input to NON hdmi and turn it off manually. otherwise it will turn on again after 15 minutes.
Switching ON only works if HDMI input was left active on Atom. But not always also...

Maybe it does not support higher than 48Khz via HDMI but as there is no proper manuals for the new unitis its hard to tell as its not documented anywhere
