SN2 issues

Posted by: snowfoxx on 15 September 2018

Recently I bought a new SN2 and it failed when I brought it home. There were loud popping and cracking sound on one channel even without any source plugged in, just speakers wired.

Unit has been RMA and I was given options to change for other items (nova) or another new SN2. According to dealer, the unit I bought suspected to have leaking capacitors or something.

Am I the only one here who faced this issue?

Had always regard Naim equipment as reliable electronics.

I knew it is an old model but shouldn't it be a trusted workhorse at least?

Any advice please, I'm lost.....don't know where to go.

That is bad luck, I would not change the Supernait for a Nova thinking you will gain reliability, quite the opposite!! I had 3 faulty Novas and changed to a Supernait2 and been flawless!

In my opinion stuck with the Supernait, cracking product.

I assume this is why you have questions about moving to a Nova in the other thread you started.

FWIW - I would go with a new SN2. I am biased since I own one but have listened to both the Nova and SN2 at the dealers and I preferred the SN2 and have been pleased with the performance at home ever since.

There are many happy Nova users who have sung its praises and you may want to use the search function and do a search of 'SN2 vs Nova' and read through some of the threads to pick up insights/opinions of others.

Really? I mean really? Anyway I would hope that your dealer will be bending over backwards in getting you a new replacement ASAP, this is most unfortunate for both you and your dealer. I would stick to your guns and go with what you originally wanted.

Like [@mention:70553749506420292] I too am biased as I also have an SN2, a few years old now and it has completely reliable. I would suggest to stick with an SN2.

Personally, if a new product was going to develop a fault, I would expect that to happen early on, even with all the factory testing that I know Naim put their products through before they ship out. I think you have been unlucky, though I’m sure that doesn’t make you feel any better.

SNOWFOX sorry to hear like Popeye multiple RMA with the Nova, BUT why do you not ask your dealer to loan you a demo Nova ...

I found it was easily superior to a 272/250DR, but best to trust your own ears.

Definitely trust with your own ears as I ended up from Nova to NDX/Supernait2 and the improvement was most certainly noticeable. What jumped out to me was definitely a lower noise floor and a clearer presentation to the music, So very interesting Obsydian found the 272/250dr inferior as it's comparable to the NDX/Supernait2.

This is why you must hear for yourself.

Snowfoxx, I am sorry to hear of your bad luck with your SN2. I believe every Naim product is tested by 3 different people on a test bench, and then listened to plugged to speakers, etc. They usually leave the factory in proper working condition.

It's not unheard of for products to sometimes be damaged during transport. I would stick to your first choice of the SN2. Your dealer should get you a replacement unit.

Things like that can occasionally happen - I’ve had an issue with a brand new NDS.
It would not play anything but high-res files. It was swiftly replaced.

Just stick to your original choice - SN2 is a brilliant integrated amp, that is flexible and will see many years of great service.

Thank you all for the insightful replies :-

Popeye - I've read your nova woes, that's why I started both threads. I'm very inclined to take another new SN2 opposed to Nova, but will audition the latter to make a decision.

MPW - its a new unit, brought home in a sealed box. Serial no. Current production.

Sea kayaker - U are right, that's why I started the threads. Will definitely audition nova but I really prefer the traditional SN2.

Stephen - it is true, no joke. A new unit is being shipped over and eta 3 weeks. I'm now using my old amp to tide over.

Chrish - glad to know a fellow SN2 owner who has a reliable unit for years. Yes, the dealer told me it has never happened before... Trust that I'm really unlucky.. Sigh.. Hope if I get the new one would serve me for years this time.

Obysydian - no loan set for nova in my country. Will audition it next to make a better informed decision.

Daniel H - thank you for the insight, hope the new unit if I chose it over nova would serve me right.

Adam Z - Guessed I'm not the only unlucky one. Hope that if I end up choosing a new SN2, I won't be bitten again!

Thank you all once again! My next step is much clearer now after hearing the advices from you nice ppl!

Hi Obsidian, I'm glad you like the Nova sound, your choice shows the importance of not always listening to others. I compared the Nova to a 272 /250DR at my friendly long term dealer, I really wanted to like and purchase a Nova to keep the box count down and the wife happy, but to my and my wife's ears the Nova was a non runner. She said a naughty word, bug.... the box count its not worth listening to. As far as audio is concerned my other half will call a spade a spade if we're spending large sums of cash. The answer of course is to use your and your partners ears. We all hear music differently and even Naim equipment has individual sounds between the ranges and you must choose the ones that involve you in the music the most and not read to much into what others such as myself say until you've listened.
