What next / future proofing
Posted by: David O on 15 September 2018
Currently I have a Core / 272 / 250DR and I am considering what next whilst trying to best future proof in the sense of upgrading.
Firstly I plan on getting a Fraim (this month) post then thoughts are a PSU for the 272 (pre Christmas) however, in time (2021) I am thinking about moving away from the 272 to a 282 or 252 and possibly one of the new streamers.
Therefore what are people’s views on which PSU that would suit a 272, as well as a 282 or 252 or is this an unrealistic wish?
Also I am thinking about getting a headline headphone amp, does this needs its own PSU or can this run off the PSU I plan to use with the 272?
thanks in advance for your insight & views
Unfortunately, the PSU's for a 272 aren't the same ones you would use on a 282 or 252.
For a 272 you are looking at any of XP5xs; XPS DR or a 555DR. You can use non DR versions.
For a 282 it's either a HiCap or Supercap.
For a 252 I believe its just a Supercap.
However, the better news is an XPS DR can be used with the NDX2 and the 555 can be used with either NDX2 or ND555 streamers.
Sorry cannot help with your Headline question. But all of this is on the Naim website under products.
Headline needs its own psu
NAPSC, Flatcap, Hi-Cap or Supercap
The last three also require a SLIC cable to work

Thanks for your feedback, looking at the Naim website and if I am understanding things correctly I could add 555DR to 272. In time replace the 272 with a new streamer using the 555DR as well as either a 252 or 282, make sense?

252 and 282 would need their own power supplies
Correct David.
Yes you could add a 555DR to your 272 and as you say in time replace your 272 with one of the new streamers and still use your 555DR with it.
In this scenario you will then need a pre-amp such as the 282 or 252 and PSU's for those as mentioned earlier.
Best buy plenty of Fraim shelves as the box count is going to creep up! LOL.

Mike

Yes, except that you still need a PSU for the preamp.
All fine except the headline, just get a nice violectric 200....or many more good ones to choose from with better offerings than headline, headline shines with a good PS and that makes it a very expensive amp
naim is good but not the master of all trades...
Given the time-scale I’d get the best possible power supply for your N272 now.
Of course if funds permit it - gor for top-of-the range 555PSDR. It will be the most flexible solution for the future.
This way, when you decide to move to a separate streamer (say NDX2 or ND555) and a pre-amp you will already have a good power supply that is capable of powering either streamer.
As [@mention:72103499161120758] wrote - pre-amps will require different power supplies altogether.
I'm surprised that a 372 and/or a 572 haven't appeared yet; building on the strengths of the excellent 272.
Future proofing? Good luck with that. Naim and every other manufacturer will always have something new to tempt us.
John.

If future proof is your priority, in my view the old school amps and preamps would be a better choice than the streaming preamp options ie. the current 272 vs 282, 252 and 552. The analogue preamps will stand the test of time as there will be little to no evolution in areas of sound quality improvements with the analogue section. Any updates, I wager, would be more toward a change in features such as removing the second row of buttons on the front panel of the 282/252 etc. On the other hand, the digital or streaming format has the tendency of getting updated more frequently so chances of seeing a 372 or 472 in 2021 or before may be higher than seeing a replacement of the 202, 282, 252 and 552.
Of course all my opinion. Having said the above, i think you are on the right track with the Fraim.
It would be very interesting to hear a shoot out between 272/555DR and NDX2/282/HCDR as they are about the same price.

I think no 272owner would ever want to listen to
