Help! am always missing one track

Posted by: oldneil on 16 September 2018

Strange things happend lately..

My last (Hd tracks) albums always missing the last track. I put the albums in the download folder as i always been doing. When i look at the download folder it shows all tracks there. But when i open the Naim App the last track is always missing. If an album got 14 tracks it only shows 13. If an album got 25 tracks it only shows 24 tracks.

Everything is updated. Naim App, n-Serve app.  And the latest Windows 10 upgrade.

This happend with my five latest downloads.

Thanks for answers.

I should power cycle your server (which I assume is Unitiserve or HDX as you still use n-serve). And also restart the Naim app.

Incidentally you say the last track is always missing. Is this the same in both n-serve and the Naim app?

I restarted my Unitiserve and the Naim app, but still its the same problem. Its the same both i n-serve and Naim app.

Its strange as all tracks are showing in the Download folder on my computer.

It drives me nuts today..

It is odd. One thing to check would be that the last track has the same metadata as the other tracks. You could do that using dBpoweramp of a similar app running on your PC. But the fact it is affecting your lady five downloads added is peculiar.

You could using the Windows Desk Top Client to tell the US to re-index itself.

Bit it might be simplest to see whether any of the real experts on Unitiserve have other ideas first.

I haven’t seen this before, and I can only imagine that the metadata must be missing for these tracks, which would explain why they are visible on a computer, which will be reading the file and folder names, but not in N-Serve, which will be reading the metadata, which is different to file names.

Do you have a metadata editor on your computer? This is always a useful thing to have if you buy downloads, and will allow you to check that it is correct and edit it.

This is good advice! ALWAYS check the metadata, and edit it if necessary, after downloading but before you add it to your server.

Most likely shows up under a different artist (or a main artist + collaboration). Happens quite often.

As my illustrious colleagues have written - metadata editing is the key to success here.

I retried today and suddenly three of the six albums were ok. So it cant be any prob with metadata.

Always last track missing!  What would Sgt Pepper be like without A Day In The Life?

Will send Naim a mail about this issue.

Might be worth following my suggestion of telling the US to reinde

x using the Windows DTC, while you wait for Naim to reply....

It's so long since I used it I forget. I think it's in tools. But someone like ChrisSU or Adam Z will be able to tell you.

If it's not indexing past a certain track, such CAN be due to the use of non-standard characters in the metadata or in the file name itself.  It can be as insidious as an invisible character - that happened to me and it took Phil Harris logging into uServe remotely to spot it some years ago.  Purchased tracks CAN have "foreign" language characters, etc., in the file names and/or metadata.  These can cause the uServe (and I presume the Core) to halt indexing.  The file doesn't just get skipped -- nothing past it gets indexed.  (Akin to a premature stop codon if you're into molecular biology.)

I use a Mac, so can’t help you with the DTC, sorry!

I’m pretty sure examining the files in a metadata editor is the thing to do. Maybe worth a rescan of the US after that to make sure any edits show up sooner rather than later.

If 14 (25) tracks are there and only 13 (24) show up on the Naim app this is most likely a server fault. A pointed out, it is possible that the metadata of the last track are corrupted. If you cannot access a detailed server log, there is little you can do apart from calling the Naim technical services. They will almost certainly be able to sort out your problem.

Like [@mention:36201736949470193] I also use a Mac. But not all hope is lost....

The Windows nServe version can be found here: https://www.naimaudio.com/updates
Please scroll to the bottom of the page and look for Naim Desktop Client. The download hyperlink is on the right-hand side.
The ZIP file will contain both Mac and Windows versions.

Here is a direct access link:

Would you mind sending me the troubled download in question? I can have a look at the metadata for you.
I already own all The Beatles on vinyl in mono, so I have absolutely no intention of keeping the files you will send me.
Please use WeTransfer - my email is in my profile.

I think the OP has the Windows DTC but can't find how to reindex the US using it....

Ya i have got Windows DTC. Looking at the "tools" but dont know what to do.

Dont think metadata is the problem here. Because when i tried again some of the albums were OK again.

Posted on: 18 September 2018 by ChrisSU

Sometimes the Unitiserve is just very slow at reading metadata and making it visible to the streamer. It’s slower still if you set it to convert to FLAC, and/or generate MP3 copies, although I guess you are not doing this. I once had a couple of albums which refused to show up for a couple of months before magically appearing, although this was some time ago, and with older firmware. Talking of which....is the US firmware up to date?

Since there don't seem to be any people who know how to use the Windows DTC here at the moment  [@mention:1566878603974210] I suggest that you phone the Naim technical support number and ask to speak to Phil Harris. He will be able to talk you through it or even dial into your pc remotely and do it for you.

If you do decide (and work out how to) re-index your Unitiserve, depending on how many albums you have stored, it can take a very long time (overnight) so don't expect it to happen right away.
I thought my HDX had broken following me telling it to re-index. I simply hadn't realised it would takes ages to complete the task, with a mere 1300 or so albums.
