Experience with Audioquest Storm power cables on NAC N272
Posted by: Henk Molenaar on 16 September 2018
My dealer in Toulouse lent me an Audioquest Tornado power cable to experiment....So i connected this power cable to my XP5XS / NAC N 272 combination and i heard an enormous difference in sound.....much more detail and much lower/more controlled bass. Really incredible and almost unbelievable....Are there other Naim users who experimented with the Audioquest Hurricane and Dragon power cables, so i can choose the right cable....?
Interesting……, no reply...…..it's not 1980 anymore with "clean" power, it's 21018 with "dirty" power, i would expect there are more Naim fans testing this type of modern designed power cables…….My experience with it is really amazing…...
I bet you’d get a bigger improvement by changing the XP5xs to an XPSDR, and unless you have dedicated mains you’d very likely be better doing that first.
Test with the Tornado powercable is very impressive: much more detail, more open, more and deeper bass and darker...I read before there is not a big difference in sound between these two Naim power supplies in combination with te 272...….My dealer suggested me to test the Audioquest Niagara 5000 power conditioner ...…, but he warned me: testing = buying!!!
A question to someone who knows. I have already a dedicated line and Naim power lines. Would something like a Niagara 5000 still give an improvement?

I tried an XPSDR for few weeks (friend loaned me his whilst he went on holiday) in place of my XP5XS and difference wasn't huge. Since then i have added a PowerLine to the XP5XS and this brought a nice lift in performance.
Almost unbelievable....., i bought an Audioquest Hurricane to connect the XP5XS/n272 combination and a Tonado to connect the NAP 250 DR.......the sound is flabbergasted.......ok, it is not cheap but this is a real system upgrade.....from HIFI to HIghEnd.......thank you Naim and Audioquest!
Hey Henk! Today I took the cheapest (not really cheap at ca. 800euro) of the new AQ power cables. It’s called a thunder. What I hear now sounds rather promising so I understand your reaction.
No fancy power cable will make that much difference to SQ IMHO. The power line is probably worth having at 272 / 250 level (and much of that is piece of mind tbh) but dedicated mains and the quality of the power supply is far more important.
maybe no, maybe yes - in Ye Olde Hotele style. Go and see yourself if possible.
Hi S3, why do you speak about a fancy power cable? I got interested in this cables after reading an interesting article about this cable in "Stereophile magazine", not a fancy magazine in my opinion......and yes I have a dedicated mains secured with an Gigawatt G-C20A twin 2 pole audio grade circuit breaker from 20 Ampere, so that's all done.
I like tradition, otherwise I would not buy Naim equipment and PROAC Response K6 speakers....., but I have an open mind for new technology and inventions, so I use a Melco N1Z/2 as a NAS with all my cd's and newly bought hi-res music from Qobuz (and sold my Naim cd player) and stream Tidal etc..
I can only say, give it a try….and (maybe) you will be surprised…...I am very suprised and deeply impressed by this evolution…..
My dealer also told me that very soon Audioquest will come with an other version of the Niagara 1000 with two unfiltered outlets instead of only one unfiltered outlet, so better to use with Naim equipment, so i will try that multiple socket too when it's there…...
And Olek-K, thanks for your reaction!
Hve a nice day and musical greetings!!
I'm a great believer in better power cables, have been for years, and have collected many over time. I use Naim Power-Lines for my 272, Core and DAVE dac; Siltech Ruby Mountain II for my 250DR; Valhalla for my CDX2. I also use a Furutech e-TP309 power distributor with an Odin power cable to the wall outlet.
What I don't understand is the extremely high price of these 'audiophile' mains cables.
(By the way Olek, who is it that you're calling an Olde Hotele?)
Yes, I agree, but it's a serious upgrade in sound, and less money than buying a new piece of Naim equipment. And diamonds are much more expensive.....so ......
