HDX v Core.

Posted by: dave marshall on 18 September 2018

My HDX is currently off at HQ, being re-NAIMed.

It'll be returning with a new 2 Tb drive, and, probably, a new CD mechanism.

So, I'm now faced with a choice of holding onto it, or trading it in against a Core.

One the one hand, the Core represents the up to date ripping engine and firmware, whilst the HDX might be somewhat clunkier in operation.

Has anyone any thoughts on the respective sound qualities from each, over UPnP?

Thanks, chaps.

You can not have sub folder structure in Core? Klassik/Bach...Klassik/Mozart etc?

You cannot browse by folder in a Naim server, only by tag view, unlike, say, Minimserver. Also, although you can use whatever file structure you like in the Downloads folder, you cannot edit the file structure of the CD rips as this upsets the database.

Ah, ok! I would really love to hear te Core to see if its a big jump from standard NAS. Some say yes, others notice it is no difference SQ wise,,,

One other little thing

The HDX kicks the cores arse in the looks front... especially if you have a classic system..

It still annoys me that naim have not made a classic version for us ...that white naim badge off to one side just doesn't cut it ..

Looks as if it's "adieu" Core, and "bienvenue" Mr. HDX then.

Of course, if you have a nas and hide it away, looks don’t matter and it sounds just as good. Yours for £500.

Point taken, Nigel, but normally, the NAS lives at another address as a safe backup, and if I were to be starting from scratch, then I might consider a new additional NAS.

However, since I already have the HDX, and it really doesn't owe me anything, once it returns from HQ, fully re-Naimed, it seems sensible to forget about the outlay for a Core, when the HDX performs  exactly the same tasks, and without the need for third party software or the involvement of a computer.

As far as I know, this is the maximum capacity drive which Naim will retrofit.
