Ripping a different version of the same album... What happens?
Posted by: Icedragon05 on 19 September 2018
As the question really, I have several different versions of various albums, remastered, remixed e.g Marillion's Brave 1994 version and remastered 24bit version.... Does anybody know if when I rip another copy will it overwrite the original or duplicate as a different version?
I don't fancy being stuck in an "overwite' loop or having to rip on pc and load via network /usb
Using Naim Initial Core..
I have four versions of 'The Dark Side Of The Moon'. I simply re-name the folder accordingly. The Dark Side Of The Moon (SACD), The Dark Side Of The Moon (HiRes) and so on...
It works for me...
I don’t know about the Core, but the Unitiserve will stubbornly overwrite the old album if it identifies the new one as being the same. The solution is to use a different ripper, edit the title/artwork, and put it in the Core downloads folder.
It’s not really about the folder names but the metadata. When a CD is ripped there is a metadata lookup. I found that two recordings of Bach’s Goldbergs were merged together so that it was track 1 by one artist, then track one by the other, then track 2 by the first and so on. Other versions of the Goldbergs had very slightly different track titles so stayed separate. The way I got round it was to edit the album titles to include the artist name, such as Bach - Goldberg Variations (Hewitt).
I have a few versions of The Smiths classic The Queen is Dead and have added ‘High Res’ or whatever to the album title to keep them separate.
I doubt the Core will cope with this, but using something like dBPoweramp will do it perfectly. So it looks like the OP will need to press the ???? into action.
I know it would be more hassle, but I really would check out ripping on a PC (or a Mac) with something like DBPoweramp (as already mentioned).
This software will give you complete control over how you rip discs and name the album. Higher resolution album cover artwork can also be added when required too, esp helpful for rarer CDs. I’ve found this facility invaluable. Their forum is good if you get stuck too.
I recently had similar issues ripping the remastered Beatles albums. In DBPoweramp it could not have been easier to edit the metadata to rename the album title and also add the correct artwork to separate them out from older ripped versions of the same album. Some of these albums had "Remastered" after the title, some not. Very easy to correct their metadata and create a uniform set in DBPA.
I’ve used this facility countless times now and wholly embrace the control it offers for organising an album collection to stream.

I agree HH. I should have known that, as I have just re-ripped all my CDs using dbpoweramp, and edited the metadata as required.
It's a problem with the UnitiServe & assume the same with Core. A friend of mine had a US & has a lot of different versions of his many classical recordings, it was possible to rip & separate file with some, not sure why other than different titles for the same works that included (maybe) the orchestra of conductor. Whatever more trouble & I ended up ripping them all for him on my laptop with dBpoweramp. He has since disposed of the US & gone QNAP NAS, far easier.
I have different versions of albums & its just so simple to edit which ever way you want with dBpoweramp & any other ripping software.
As Chrissu has suggested, if the metadata look up is the same then the Core will over write existing, no way out of that other than using a computer. Use your favourite ripping software and place in the Downloads folder of the Core. Look at the Core frequently asked questions on Naim site and follow the instructions to the letter. Rich
Thanks folks, that appears to cover it, I haven't got that many duplicates so when I get to them I'll do the first with core and follow up with different descriptions on pc.....
