Olive 82, Supercap, Nap 250

In my continuing search for a second system I'm picking up the above on Sunday morning and am really looking forward to hearing what they can do.

Haven't you just rehomed it?
Yes it has gone this evening to a new home in fact the same guy who bought the SBL's has taken it for an active system. A shame it would have been nice to compare with an Olive 250, but it really deserves a Nac 12/Snaps or at least a 32.5.
I'm just gutted for you that the SBLs were rejected out of hand!

Yes, the SBLs can be phenomenal - I'm wondering what I'm missing running mine active as I'm using some passive Epos ES14s currently for logistical reasons, I think the Epos give me another octave down below but lack the authority and cohesiveness of the active SBLs....
Bob the Builder posted:analogmusic posted:Bob to be fair, you were running your previous 282 with a non Naim PSU, so that is not the Naim intended sound. I can't see how it is fair to generalize like this ?
Analogmusic
When I first bought my 282 replacing a 202 and forming the opinions I speak about above I ran it with Chrome Bumper Hicap for six months before moving on to the Dual Cuddly Toy (which after a long trial I preferred to the HC) a fact which I've spoken about many times but as is common for you, you cherry pick the parts of the posts you read that support the same old tired argument.
like many others on this forum you take peoples apathy at the electronics you have championed as a personal slur.
I wasn't aware or did not remember that you tried a Naim PSU with the Hicap.
Fair enough. just was interested to know that you indeed you had heard the 282 as Naim designed it.
May I remind members that discussion of unauthorised modifications on Naim equipment, which includes discussion of non-Naim PSUs for Naim kit, is not permitted, as per forum rules. Thank you.

Yeah I know but I've learned to pick my battles where hifi is concerned and to be fair they would never have displaced my Dyns and for my second system I want something with a big set of drivers 12" or 15".
In which case a pair of those big JBLs that Richard fancies would do you.

Nah! A pair of 300B monoblocs. Peder's got a pair. Then a Garrard off Richard, and a Koetsu off someone else... The forum would see you right
Is Technics Japanese?
Are these large enough?
Technics is owned by Panasonic. They look like they could fill a concert hall?

Today’s the day..........
Only listening, no report here on the forum? That's good news for you, B!

Have you heard of anyone using dual Supercaps on a Nac 82 ?
Now that is an interesting idea........
I tried dual Supercaps on a 52 once...
Well we can safely say the 82 is 100% staying. The difference between it and the 102 is so, much more than the difference between the 202 and the 282 and this was with a Hicap first for the first hour I'm not great at descriptions but let's say it improved everything.
Then I added the Supercap for the rest of the evening and this afternoon and there is a wow when it comes to detail some instruments that are too forward in the mix leap right out from the speakers but this can in certain circumstances over power the rest but when it is right it sounds incredible. Put a very well mastered record on like Music Matters remastser of Ike Quebec's Blue & Sentimental and it is very, very good but wether the records that sound good out weigh the ones that are a bit too much remains to be seen. With the Hicap this wasn't an issue they all sounded great I wish I had two Hicaps to try.
Never mind the oh-so-boring electronics Bob, what about the big mamma speakers that Ardbeg showed on the previous page?!

Christopher love those big speakers unfortunately though they don't always sound as good as they look especially with Naim. I've always really lusted after a big set of 15" Tannoys in huge cabs feed by a big powerful KT-88 valve driven power amp but these things are so pricey now.
I recently bought a pair of big Pioneer CS-88's A from a charity shop for my 2nd system project cost £30 and looked the absolute n*** 5 drivers per speaker and big 12" woofers. They were some of the best built speakers I've seen handmade cabinets that were beautiful but unfortunately the two main tweeter's surrounds where rotted and so they sounded rough.
I sold them to a guy on another forum who will no doubt work some magic on them and was going to feed them with a beautiful hand built single input passive pre and a big monster power amp

Welcome to the 82-club. It is quite lively compared to 102. Gives so much more insight and lot of fun! Truly Naim by nature.

Thanks Fred loving the 82 not completely sure about the 82/SuperCap over the 82 Hicap yet though. I just listened to favorite record of mine and the xylophone player sounded like he was next to me but it totally dominated the record.
Let the Supercap warm up a couple of days or a week before you decide. Do not switch back and forth as you never reach full warm up.

Thanks for replying.
When I worked in retail on Totttenham Court Rd in the early nineties I'm pretty sure we drove a pair of Tannoy Westminsters with a Musical Fidelity A1. Sounded sweet. Maybe a Nait 2 would do you!
A huge price for the speakers as you say though.
