ND555 Firmware update today
Posted by: Michael on 25 September 2018
A firmware update has become available today for the ND555. It is a fully automated process, just press update on the app and it updates without a hitch.
Most notably the issue with the display buttons brightness and standby mode affecting the Naim logo has been fixed along with one or two other issues.
My ND555 is on 3.0.1.3990 and says it is up to date the IRadio is showing the bit rate which was part of the update so I assume all is OK?
how come this update wasn't 'announced' as per normal, or did I just miss it?
Yes PCD same here so all is well.
No Ken you didn’t miss anything it just appeared on my app, I did not see a formal announcement anywhere, which is unusual.
Getting somewhat confuddled by the apparent conundrum of the fact that those of us on 3.0.0.3944 are being told that our firmware is up to date, yet there seems also to exist version 3.0.1.3990, which one would assume to be a later version.
What is occurring folks?

Have you tried updating via the Naim app rather than the ND555?
Yes, I updated via the app, resulting in 3.0.0.3944, but I don't know whether this was the original installed version, and the update simply refused to load, but trying again today, "Firmware is up to date" is the message.
Again, checking on the ND555 panel, the same version is installed, and "is up to date".
Bit of a mystery?

I suspect it's a secret.
Look at it this way... you've dismantled the 'beta test group' which was your band of loyal customers who would do your user testing for you at no cost and without complaining when things went wrong. Quite why you did this dismantling remains unclear, but there were probably sound financial reasons for doing so. So you no longer have the confidence that what you've developed and tested in house (hardly what we used to call 'stress testing') is going to work frightfully well in the field... what would you then do? (pick one)
Would you:
a) shout from the rooftops that a new version is available, causing hundreds to download and install it, potentially flooding your support chaps if there are any bugs remaining and thus bringing your reputation once more into question, software wise.
b) quietly make the new firmware available to a few more informed folk in the hope that it won't crash, but if it does, the damage can be limited because of the small number of folk who have realised it's there and installed it.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not suggesting for a minute that the management team tasked with these decisions is that cynical, this is a hypothetical situation I've dreamed up for fun.
Which one would you pick?
Oh, by the way, my ND555 has failed to update, it just sits there, moves to the 'rooms' page and does no more. I'm sure that behaviour might have been picked up by the beta team. And now it tells me 'update server not found' or words to that effect, it's probably closed for the night.
PS - has Phil really gone, or is this more fake news from the HiFi press?

This wouldn't have happened with my NDS
Oh, looks like the Update Server has been taken offline ("not available"). Hopefully not damage limitation action?
If Phil’s absence is in fact temporary they may want to wait for his return before the firmware update but someone put it out prematurely. It was then pulled when the mistake was realised.

Naim have proved again and again what they are good at, sound reproduction, and what they are relatively poor at, software implementation.
In their defence perhaps there isn’t a beta group yet to fully test these new versions of software and ios12 is not without some bugs also. Probably doesn’t help that apparently Phil Harris has left the building along with Elvis, Roy and a few others lately.

Phil left,how...why? Blinking flip.
Nooo!! Not Phil! No.
If it is true Phil has probably had enough and he probably saw the writing on the wall I.e. nothing has changed with firmware and app bugs, groundhog day.
It’s important to remember that Naim is a commercial operation and not a charity. Reorganisation is essential in order to ensure that the business remains effective and fit for purpose. It’s nothing to do with cynical cost cutting. Maybe people would prefer Naim to never change and gradually to wither away. Alternatively they do what they need to do to remain profitable and generate funds to plough back into R&D. Much as we love Naim, what they do is really none of our business.
Yes, but communication in recent times has not been a strong point, there is more to this going on in the background than Phil. Not replacing Steve Hopkins was a perhaps a sign of things to come. I think we are waiting for Naim to appoint an MD.........there has been apparently some turmoil in this objective.
Hopefully when the dust settles we still have a great service and support with Phil et al.

Good shout, Michael, and many thanks.
Isn’t it just? Much less trouble.
Easy as on the Unitis I assume, however difficult to revert to older versions if you prefer them for any reason, unless Naim are offering historical firmware as downloads for the newest streamers.
In most cases I'm sure people will just want to be up to date, but I still run an older firmware on a Nova as I prefer the sound.

What indeed is occurring?
Earlier my ND555 was telling me an update was available from 3944 to 3990; it offered me the option to install, but when I pressed this, it thought awhile then showed me the 'rooms' page... then did nothing more. Pressing 'home' on the remote took me back to the home page, no update performed.
I thought "A restart! That usually clears things" (after all, I haven't worked in IT for 40 years without picking up one or two tips), so I performed a power cycle (restart by powering down the CD555PS's).
And now... it tells me my firmware is up to date - at 3944.
Something quite strange is occurring folks.

Snap. Exactly the same process and result.
...so should I do an upgrade now or not?
T38.45 posted:...so should I do an upgrade now or not?
Is the app actually offering an upgrade to you??
Done a bit of enquiring and whilst I am unable to reveal my (reliable) source, I understand that the upgrade has been withdrawn due to there being some issues with it.
Watch this space as they say.
Good morning everyone,
Yes [@mention:1566878603880520] is correct - the latest update has been withdrawn.
A multiroom issue has been reported to Naim Audio with the recently released streamer firmware version (3.0.1). The issue occurs when Mu-so or an original Uniti or Streamer product is the multiroom master and a new Streamer (ND555, NDX2, ND5XS) is the client. When streaming music in this configuration the sound is muted on the streamer client.
As an interim precaution we have pulled the 3.01 release from the download server for NDX 2, ND 555 and ND5 XS 2 and will make a new release available soon.
In the meantime if you’re using multiroom and 3.0.1 with ND 555, NDX 2 or ND 5XS 2, making any of these products the master will solve the problem.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
All the best,
Matt
Well, now we know .................... I'll just carry on enjoying the ND555 then, and ignore the fact that the firmware is not the latest and greatest .................

Thanks Matt. As a matter of interest, why wasn't this upgrade announced here and on Naim site as usual? or is this the new way of delivering updates now -- i.e. 'unannounced'?
enjoy

Hi,
Please see the following announcement concerning firmware 3.0.1:
https://forums.naimaudio.com/t...e-announcement-3-0-1
Kind Regards
The Naim ‘Beta test group’ is still very active and we appreciate the efforts and support from our loyal customers, providing us with valuable information about our products and Apps in a real customer environment.
We are only aware of 2 customers on the Beta forum who have a ND 555 or NDX 2, we reached out to both and one provided us with feedback which we took on board.
We would welcome additional Beta testers to help us with constructive feedback for future releases across our range of products, especially New Streamer, ND 555, NDX 2 and ND 5XS 2.
Recently the number of members of the Beta group for Mu-so and Qb have dropped. If you know of anyone who has either of these products, or any other Naim product and would like to join the Beta forum, please send a request into beta@naimaudio.com
Regards Roland
You could always loan me an ND555 (would need to include a Statement though) and i could beta test no problem
